Georgia State-Tennessee State basketball game canceled due to COVID-19, injuries

The 4-2 Georgia State Panthers won't be facing the 1-5 Tennessee State Tigers on Wednesday evening after all.

According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), a combination of a positive COVID-19 test result, contact tracing and injuries left Georgia State with seven scholarship players and nine total players for this past Saturday's matchup versus the Rhode Island Rams. The Panthers lost that game 94-59.

As of Tuesday, Georgia State said that this coming Saturday's contest at the 3-4 Mercer Bears remains on, as scheduled. Tennessee State plays at the 2-4 Chicago State Cougars that same day.

This development serves as the latest reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic will inevitably continue to impact collegiate and professional sports throughout the winter months even though personnel can receive safe vaccine shots and boosters. The NHL's New York Islanders recently had their season paused because of a COVID-19 outbreak, and a reported nine NFL players tested positive for the coronavirus on Monday.
