Georgia Tech is closing in on hiring Scott Cross as its next men’s basketball coach, reports ESPN.

The Yellow Jackets are working toward a deal with the Troy head coach to replace Damon Stoudamire.

Stoudamire was fired earlier this month after three seasons in Atlanta. He posted a 42-55 overall record and never reached the NCAA Tournament. This year’s team finished 11-20, including a dismal 2-16 mark in ACC play that left Georgia Tech dead last in the conference standings by two full games.

The Yellow Jackets closed the season with a 12-game losing streak.

Cross would arrive with a strong track record. He has led Troy to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Sun Belt regular-season titles. Over his 19-year Division I career — split between UT Arlington and Troy — he has amassed 350 wins.

This season marked his third NCAA appearance overall. Troy went 22-12 before falling in the first round to Nebraska.

Earlier at UT Arlington, Cross produced three straight 20-win seasons before his surprising dismissal, a move many consider one of college basketball’s biggest front-office mistakes. The Mavericks have struggled to regain consistency since his departure.
