If Georgia Tech plans to make noise in Year 2 under Damon Stoudamire, they’ll need a floor general who can take command from day one. Enter Dezayne Mingo — the Marshall standout who’s quickly becoming one of the most sought-after names in the transfer portal.
After two-year starter Nait George entered the portal, Georgia Tech was left without a true point guard heading into the 2025 season. That’s where Mingo fits in. The 6’4”, 185-pound guard averaged 12.6 points and 5.2 assists per game last season, showing the ability to create shots and control tempo — traits the Yellow Jackets are now lacking.
Stoudamire knows that his team can’t afford to stall in the halfcourt again. With Mingo’s size, quickness, and solid 42% shooting from the field, he’s the kind of player who could take over right away — both as a leader and a primary creator.
Georgia Tech isn’t alone in its pursuit. According to League Ready, up to 18 schools have reached out to Mingo. St. John’s, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Texas, Georgetown, Pitt and Seton Hall are among some of the other programs expressing interest in Mingo. But the Yellow Jackets can offer something many can’t: immediate minutes in a Power conference and a system that’s hungry for a guard who can make plays.
With Kam Craft already committed to provide spacing on the wing — 13.6 PPG on 43% from three — Mingo’s potential fit becomes even more intriguing. Craft’s shooting and Mingo’s driving ability could be a dynamic pairing in Stoudamire’s offensive system.
Georgia Tech isn’t just looking to add talent — they’re trying to build a core. With Baye Ndongo, Jaeden Mustaf, and a promising freshman class in place, landing Mingo could be the catalyst for a postseason push.
For Yellow Jackets fans, this isn’t just about interest — it’s about momentum. If Georgia Tech wants to compete in the ACC and bring buzz back to McCamish Pavilion, securing Mingo is a move that can’t be left on the table.
