Historic College Basketball Team Loses Its Entire Roster to the NCAA Transfer Portal

It’s no secret that the NCAA Transfer Portal has become one of the biggest developments in athletics across all major collegiate sports. With college athletes now able to get paid to play, it has sparked a whirlwind of players taking advantage of this opportunity.

Despite the NCAA Tournament approaching the Final Four, the transfer portal for basketball opened on March 24. Since then, more than 1,000 players have entered, with a portion of them coming from Bloomington, Indiana.

Following the departure of Mike Woodson, former West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries was named the new head coach of one of the most iconic programs in college basketball history, the Indiana Hoosiers. However, he now faces the daunting task of rebuilding the entire roster this offseason

Since the portal opened, Indiana is left with no scholarship players. Every member of last year’s roster is either graduating or considering leaving the Hoosiers. However, this could very well be part of DeVries' plan to rebuild this historic program, which hasn’t seen much success in recent years.

Notable departures from the Indiana roster include Myles Rice, Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, Jakai Newton, and Gabe Cupps, who recently committed to Ohio State to continue his college basketball career.

That said, for the sake of Indiana’s future, there are still many prominent names in the transfer portal. The growing belief is that DeVries will bring his son, Tucker DeVries, to Bloomington next season. Tucker has followed his father throughout his collegiate journey and remains a highly sought-after prospect in the portal, although he has not yet made a decision.

Additionally, graduate forward Luke Goode has expressed a desire to return, but he would need to be granted another year of eligibility, a decision that has yet to be made by the NCAA.

With the NCAA Tournament wrapping up, the coming weeks will be crucial for Indiana, as Darian DeVries currently doesn't have a team to manage or even address.
