The Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball had a notable storyline emerge during their Big 12 Tournament run, as forward Bryson Tiller was benched for the entire second half of Kansas’ semifinal loss to Houston, a decision that caught many by surprise, including Tiller himself.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” Tiller said when describing his reaction to the benching. “There’s nothing we can do about it at this point.”
The quotes were provided by the Kansas City Star’s Shreyas Laddha, who delved into the situation with multiple notable Kansas figures in the aftermath of the move.
Despite the unexpected move, Tiller’s response has been measured and forward-focused, echoing the mindset that Kansas has emphasized heading into the NCAA Tournament. Rather than dwelling on the decision, the message internally has been about responding the right way.
Head coach Bill Self made it clear that the benching was tied to effort and physicality, particularly among the Jayhawks’ frontcourt players.
“Same thing I need to see from all our bigs, hit first, aggressiveness,” Self said. “You know, get 70% of the 50-50 balls.”
Self expanded on that expectation, pointing to the potential he sees in Kansas’ big men and what they must do to maximize their impact.
“There are a lot of things that our bigs can do to put us in a better position,” Self said. “Considering I know what their threes, fours, and fives are capable of and being so good at those particular things.”
Importantly, his teammates had his back, as senior guard Melvin Council told Tiller, “I’m going to need you next game.”
“I feel like everybody hits a wall,” Flory Bidunga said. “I feel like he’s a great player. I don’t think this couple of games will cut him off or anything. I feel like he will come back even stronger.”
That sentiment was echoed by Darryn Peterson, who pointed to Tiller’s steady mindset despite the situation.
“His mentality is the same,” Peterson said. “Not negative at all. Obviously, he wanted to be playing. It’s Coach’s decision, and we can’t control what Coach does. I think he responded from it, not in a negative way at all.”
As Kansas moves forward into its second-round matchup with St. John’s, the focus now shifts to how Tiller responds on the court. If his teammates are right, the benching may end up being less of a setback and more of a turning point.
