Darian DeVries had a shaky start to his tenure with the Indiana Hoosiers. In his first season as head coach, the Hoosiers went just 18-14 and 9-11 in Big Ten matchups. It's the third straight year the program has failed to make the NCAA Tournament.
To make matters worse, Indiana has already lost six players to the transfer portal since it officially opened on April 7. As the offseason rolls on, that number can continue to rise with the portal not closing until April 21. However, DeVries and his staff have not just sat by while other teams build up their rosters.
On Wednesday, On3's Joe Tipton reported that Indiana has received a commitment from former Alabama Crimson Tide forward Aiden Sherrell.
As a member of the 2024 recruiting class, the sophomore just put together his best season at the collegiate level. Sherrell started in 34 games, averaging 11.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists. Hitting career highs in all averages, he also shot 53.9% from the field and 33.8% from the three-point line.
His performance on the court and two years of eligibility made him one of the most sought-after players to hit the transfer portal this offseason. On3 Industry Rankings list him as a four-star recruit and the No. 14 player.
Indiana beat out a handful of other teams for his commitment. On3's Jamie Shaw previously reported that the Michigan State Spartans, Duke Blue Devils, LSU Tigers and Baylor Bears were all linked to Sherrell.
He becomes the fifth player the Hoosiers have landed this offseason. He joins center Samet Yigitoglu (SMU Mustangs), guard Markus Burton (Notre Dame Fighting Irish), guard/forward Darren Harris (Duke) and guard Jaeden Mustaf (Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets). The group currently ranks first in the nation.
