Jahmai Mashack is as good as it gets on the defensive end of the court for a young player coming into the NBA. That's evident by the way Mashack handled his business at an elite level for the Tennessee Volunteers across his college career.
Mashack also is as good as it gets as far as effort and intensity goes. Rick Barnes confirmed that about him and Zakai Zeigler earlier this year about their practice habits.
But despite that intensity, effort, and execution on the defensive end of the court, you have to be able to help put the ball in the hoop on the other end. You have to have some level of versatility to your game on the court.
It appears as though Mashack might be more than the defensive specialist he's been tabbed by some to be, at least if his first professional games are any indication.
Mashack had his best overall performance of the season for the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night during NBA Summer League action. He totaled 15 points (6-10 FG), 5 boards, 4 assists, and 4 steals in the Grizzlies' 96-84 loss to Golden State.

This is a crucial stretch for Mashack and all other fringe roster players looking to land on the right side of the cut line for the final roster next season. The summer league only runs from July 10-20, so opportunities are limited to stand out. As such, each game is important, so performances like this could go a long way for making a case to get the nod from the Grizzlies' coaching staff.
Mashack will have two more chances in Summer League play to shine again - on July 17 against Atlanta and then at least one more game to be determined on July 18-20. We'll see if he can continue to impress as the league's premier summer event winds down.
