After being shot in the leg on his first day back home during Christmas break, Jeremy Fears Jr. is headed back to East Lansing.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Tom Izzo provided an update on Michigan State freshman Jeremy Fears Jr. As you all know, Fears was shot in the leg back at in hometown of Joliet, Ill., over their holiday break. He did not suffer any life-threatening injuries and has had a successful surgery already.

Now, according to Izzo, Fears will be returning to East Lansing very soon.

Tom Izzo update on Jeremy Fears

MLive reporter Kyle Austin shared this post on social media regarding what Izzo had to say about Jeremy Fears.

I’m excited to hear that Fears is returning to East Lansing. Obviously if he would’ve chosen to stay home longer, there’s nothing wrong with that, but I think coming back to campus will be a good thing. It will help Fears try to get back a sense of normalcy in his life, something he probably hasn’t felt since the incident. This will also allow him to contribute to the team’s success again. Now we all know he won’t be contributing on the court, but he can still give the team advice during practice, games and watching film.

The most important thing Izzo mentioned is that there is “no timetable for his return to basketball”. As I mentioned in the past, basketball doesn’t matter after an event like this. All Fears and the entire Spartan community need to focus on is his recovery, both mentally and physically.

Jeremy Fears’ season in review

Previously it was announced that doctors said Fears will be sidelined for at least three months. This likely ends his season.

Jeremy was off to an excellent start this year. He averaged 3.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Fears is also coming off his best game of the season where he dished out 10 assists in MSU’s dominant win over Stony Brook.

Will Fears be on the sideline for the Indiana State game on Saturday? I really hope so. I’m sure all of Spartan Nation want to show him their support, and I can only imagine the round of applause and chants directed his way that the Breslin Center will give him.
