Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self was hospitalized on Thursday, after experiencing “concerning symptoms,” according to a statement from the university. Self, 62, was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he underwent a procedure to insert two cardiac stents. The operation “went very well,” the university said, and he is expected to make a full recovery and be released soon.
This marks the second time in recent years Self has undergone treatment for heart-related issues. He previously missed both the 2023 Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Tournament after having two stents placed to address blocked arteries during a heart catheterization that year.
Self has been coaching at Kansas since 2003. In his tenure, he has led the Jayhawks to two national championships (2008, 2022), four Final Four appearances, and a record 14 consecutive Big 12 regular-season titles. Self is the all-time winningest coach in Kansas basketball history.
Meanwhile, Kansas is heading into a transition offseason following an early NCAA Tournament exit last season. Longtime assistant coach Norm Roberts, who served as acting head coach when Self was sidelined in 2023, retired in May, and former Kansas star Jacque Vaughn has stepped in as his replacement.
Despite recent health concerns and a less-than-stellar stretch of seasons since the 2022 championship run, Self continues to coach with high expectations for the upcoming 2025–26 season.
