The rankings would suggest that new Kansas hoops commit Labaron Philon is one of the best 2024 basketball recruits in the nation.
According to 247Sports, he's the No. 3 point guard recruit as well as the No. 27 player nationally. If you were to believe his Nike EYBL Circuit coach Norton Hurd IV, though, Philon is the top point guard recruit in the country.
"Labaron brings everything you need in a point guard," Hurd IV told 247Sports. "I feel like he is the best point guard in the country, as far as having a balanced attack on scoring for himself and others. He's a leader on and off the court, and he competes on both ends of the court."
That's a bit of a biased scouting report, of course, but it's worth noting that the numbers do flesh it out. During the spring and summer EYBL periods, Philon averaged 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.8 steals a game.
At 6-foot-4, Philon has the height of a modern point guard, but he also flashes elite athleticism and finishing abilities. He also has an outside shot to be wary of if you're a defender. He shot 51.5% from the floor in Nike EYBL as well as 31.4% from three. Those are numbers that should only improve when he gets to Kansas.
Philon committed to Kansas over Alabama, Ole Miss and Cincinnati. From Mobile, Alabama, but going to high school at Link Academy in Branson, Missouri, he was also at one time committed to Auburn.
Head coach Bill Self now has two 2014 commitments. Philon, a four-star recruit, joins five-star center Flory Bidunga.
