One of the most memorable broadcasters in college football, coach Lee Corso is stepping down from his role on ESPN's College GameDay after 38 years.
With his final broadcast being the programs' first airing of the 2025 season in August, Corso, who is 89 years old, leaves an indelible mark in the minds of college football fans; especially the Oregon Ducks fanbase. Many times, Corso's affinity for mascot culture has left his co-stars to refer to The Oregon Duck as the coach's "best friend."
At the end of every broadcast, Corso is famously known to wear the headgear of a teams' mascot to signify his pick to win the game. Out of the 11 visits the College GameDay crew made to Eugene, Oregon, Corso has worn The Duck head all 11 times. Eight of those 11 picks turned out to be correct.
In his latest (potentially final) Oregon game pick for Corso, the legendary coach chose Brutus Buckeyes' head for the Ohio State Buckeyes to win the Rose Bowl, and he ended up picking correctly. Corso has gone 14-7 when picking games the Ducks were playing in.
Let's take a look at some of the iconic moments involving Corso and the Oregon Ducks.
That's how coach Corso started his conversation with The Duck, as the mascot, Corso, Oregon Basketball legend and guest picker Sabrina Ionescu, along with the rest of the College Gameday crew picked their projected winners for Oregon's 2022 game in Eugene vs the No. 9 ranked UCLA Bruins.
"It's hard to think of anything else except I love you," Corso said to The Duck as the feathered friend put his hand on his heart.
Corso ended up choosing the Ducks to win the match, as a live duck was ushered onto the set to accompany the coach and his favorite mascot. The Ducks ended up winning against the Bruins 45-30.
In 2010, the College GameDay crew headed to Los Angeles for No. 2 Oregon at the unranked USC Trojans. With comedian Will Ferrell as the guest picker, Corso sat at the desk during picks with a mascot-sized version of his own head.
When it was his turn to make the pick for the Trojans vs the Ducks, Corso handed his own mascot head to Ferrell in return for his familiar Oregon buddy's visage. They then went on to fake-fight the comedian as a tag team.
Oregon won against the Trojans 53-32.
Their first stop ever in Corvallis, Oregon, in 2010 for the No. 1 ranked Ducks vs the unranked Oregon State Beavers for the rivalry game, Corso left the College GameDay desk early, with his co-analysts remarking the coach was "always up to something."
The coach later appeared on another College GameDay set with The Ducks' head and webbed feet on top of his suit. The Duck swapped out his head for Corso's mascot head, as the two made squawking noises and waved to the crowd.
Oregon beat the Beavers 37-20.
The two ended up swapping heads once again for an ESPN commercial.
"We came too far for you not to pick this guy," Herbstreit said as Corso, crew, and guest picker, Animal House actor Tim Matheson, decided on No. 7 Stanford Cardinals against the unranked Oregon Ducks in 2018. After much debate, Kirk Herbstreit lowered the head onto Corso.
Out came The Duck and a live duck to seal the deal as Corso waved to the crowd and "food fight" was shouted with creams pies thrown into the audience.
The Ducks ended up losing to the Cardinals 31-38 in overtime.
Another all-time classic, Corso chose the Oregon Ducks to win over the Michigan State Spartans in Michigan in 2015. With NBA star Draymond Green as the guest picker, Corso acted confused as The Duck waddled up to him with a Duck mascot head.
The camera then cut to Corso's head-gear handler, a Michigan State fan, tied up with electric green tape, his mouth tape inscribed with the words "Not so fast."
Oregon went on to win against the Spartans, 31-28.
