Miami secures top recruit in program history

Five-star shooting guard Jalil Bethea announced his commitment to Miami on his Instagram Wednesday afternoon.

Bethea, a 6-foot-4 guard from Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster, Pa., with elite athleticism and one of the best perimeter shots in the country, is the highest-ranked recruit in Miami's history. He impressed on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer, averaging 18.7 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 41.2% from three and 85.7% from the free throw line while leading Team Final to the Peach Jam quarterfinals.

Bethea ultimately chose Miami over Kansas and Villanova. He told ESPN that Miami's plan to grow his game and use him in the pick-and-roll, and the coaching staff's commitment to him during his recruitment is why he chose to play for the Hurricanes and head coach Jim Larrañaga.

Larrañaga has a history of developing NBA-level guards, including Shane Larkin, Sheldon Mac, Lonnie Walker, Bruce Brown and Isaiah Wong.
Bethea will join four-star guard Austin Swartz and three-star forward Isaiah Johnson-Arigu in making up the third-best recruiting class in the country, per 247Sports.

After consecutive Elite Eight runs, including a program-best finish last season in the Final Four and one of the top recruiting classes in the country headlined by Bethea, Miami is quickly establishing itself as a basketball powerhouse. Its combination of on-court success, player development, NIL ambition and now recruiting are putting the Hurricanes in a position to be consistent championship contenders.

Most people think of Miami as a football school. However, that reputation is changing, and recruits like Bethea are taking notice. If Larrañaga can continue adding to the momentum he's built the past two seasons, and Bethea develops into a true star, the sky's the limit for the Hurricanes.
