The emotions before a national championship can be tense and difficult to process. But that hasn’t been the case with Dan Hurley and Dusty May, as both coaches shared some lighthearted exchanges ahead of their big game.

Hurley’s UConn is looking to win its third NCAA Tournament title in four years. Meanwhile, Michigan is eyeing its first championship since 1989. Interestingly, neither Hurley nor May had even played college basketball the last time the Wolverines won a title. But for the UConn coach, his counterpart appeared much younger than expected.

“I didn’t realize how old he was. He’s 49 years old?” Hurley joked during the press conference. He then pointed to May’s hair as the source of his confusion, adding, “He looks really young… his hair—he looks great.”

When it was May’s turn to address the media, he didn’t waste time responding. “Well, when God gives you the raspy voice, height, and lack of vertical jump, he’s gotta bless you with something,” he said, delivering a perfectly timed, self-deprecating joke.

Beyond the humor, however, there is a clear layer of mutual respect. Hurley has built UConn into a powerhouse with relentless intensity, while May’s rise with Michigan has been defined by discipline and adaptability. Their paths to the championship have been different, but equally impressive.

While their personalities and appearances may differ, their passion and coaching talent are remarkably aligned. And when the ball tips on Monday, the laughs will fade and the stakes will take over, but the respect will remain.
