PORTLAND, Oregon — Cinderella’s carriage finally turned back into a pumpkin on Saturday night inside the Moda Center, but man, what an unbelievable ride it was.

The High Point University men’s basketball team didn’t just show up to the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 32 to be a footnote in someone else’s March Madness highlight reel. After stunning No. 5 Wisconsin in the opening round, the 12th-seeded Panthers stepped onto the hardwood ready to trade absolute haymakers with the No. 4 Arkansas Razorbacks. And throw them they did.

For 40 grueling, heart-pounding minutes, High Point proved they belonged on the sport’s biggest stage, ultimately falling 94-88 in an absolute barnburner that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.

Trading Paint with Goliath: The First Half

If you expected the SEC champions to waltz in and physically dominate a mid-major underdog, someone clearly forgot to hand High Point the script. This game was a certified heavyweight bout, featuring a dizzying 15 lead changes and six ties. Neither team ever managed to build a lead larger than eight points.

High Point came out swinging. Terry Anderson set the tone early, floating a gorgeous layup high off the glass just two minutes into the contest to give the Panthers a quick 7-2 advantage. But basketball is a game of runs, and Arkansas inevitably pushed back, leaning on their lottery-pick talent to build a 28-20 lead midway through the first half.

That’s when the Panthers’ perimeter shooters decided to catch absolute fire. Chase Johnston drilled a crucial three, sparking a momentum shift. Cam’Ron Fletcher—who was an absolute menace off the bench—and Rob Martin followed suit from beyond the arc, instantly shrinking the deficit to a single point.

The closing moments of the first half were pure March magic. Johnston, pulling up from a different zip code with serious Steph Curry energy, buried a triple with just 16 seconds left to give HPU a 42-41 lead. Arkansas managed to hit two free throws right before the buzzer, sending the Razorbacks to the locker room with the slimmest of margins, 43-42.

A Second Half for the Ages

If the first half was a prelude, the second half was a masterpiece of grit. Right out of the locker room, High Point put their foot on the gas. The Panthers ripped off a blistering 10-0 run, fueled heavily by Anderson, who seemed to be everywhere at once. With 14 minutes left on the clock, HPU held a 56-52 lead, and you could feel the collective blood pressure of the state of Arkansas rising.

The pace was frenetic. Johnston buried yet another massive three to knot the game at 65 with ten minutes to play. For the next five minutes, it was a one-possession dogfight.

But down the stretch, the Razorbacks’ raw firepower began to show. Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr. decided it was his time, sinking a clutch and-one to give the Razorbacks an 81-76 cushion with five minutes left. Still, High Point refused to go quietly into the Portland night. Martin—who was nothing short of spectacular—pushed the pace in transition to tie the game at 83-83.

Martin finished the night with a staggering, season-high 30-point performance, shooting 11-for-23 from the floor while dishing out five assists. He left every ounce of sweat on that court before fouling out in the final agonizing seconds. Fletcher was right there with him, pouring in 25 points and grabbing eight boards, while Anderson rounded out the double-digit scorers with 15 points.

Heartbreak, but Make it Historic

As the clock ticked under a minute, a dagger three-pointer from Arkansas pushed their lead to 90-83. The Panthers clawed back desperately. Braden Hausen sank a deep, prayer-answering three to cut the lead to 92-88 with just nine seconds remaining, but the ensuing foul game allowed the Razorbacks to ice it at the line, 94-88.

There were tears. There was heartbreak. But above all, there was immense pride.

“I’m really proud of our guys, man,” an emotional Head Coach Flynn Clayman said after the game. “We really competed with the SEC champs, lottery picks, and guys who are the best of the best. Our team and our university really showed out. We packed the house, we had fun, and we played with confidence. I don’t think anyone expected us to do what we did here… win 31 games, get to the tournament, advance, and push the SEC champs. What a ride.”

Coach Clayman hit the nail on the head. This isn’t just a story about a loss; it’s the story of a legendary 31-5 season. It’s the story of a first-year head coach shattering Big South and program records. It’s the story of a team that made the entire country sit up, take notice, and respect the culture of High Point University.

The Cinderella run might be over, but the foundation they just built? That’s going to last a very, very long time.
