New Mexico junior point guard Donovan Dent, the 2024-25 Mountain West Player of the Year, will enter the transfer portal, according to On3’s Joe Tipton.
Tipton reported that Dent could return to New Mexico but wants to explore his options. Lobos head coach Richard Pitino has been linked to several open jobs, including Villanova, West Virginia and Xavier.
The 6-foot-2 Dent put together a sensational junior year for New Mexico, averaging 20.4 points, 6.4 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Dent was the nation’s only player to average 20 or more points and six or more assists this season.
With Dent leading the way, New Mexico captured the MWC regular-season title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lobos fell to Michigan State, 71-63, in the round of 32.
A four-star prospect coming out of Southern California’s Corona Centennial High School, Dent joined New Mexico for the 2022-23 season. Dent was a key reserve as a freshman and started all 35 games last year, putting up 14.1 points and 5.4 assists as the Lobos won the MWC Tournament title.
According to 247Sports, Dent is the No. 2 overall player nationally in the portal.
Several other MWC schools have also lost key players to the portal.
San Diego State center Magoon Gwath, the MWC Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, entered the portal Monday. Gwath averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks for the Aztecs, who were one of four MWC teams to reach the NCAA Tournament.
Gwath is 247Sports’ No. 13 overall player in the portal.
Fellow San Diego State star Nick Boyd, a second-team all-MWC selection as a guard, is also in the portal. Boyd, who transferred to the Aztecs from Florida Atlantic last offseason, averaged 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists during his one year with San Diego State.
Nevada forward Nick Davidson, UNLV point guard Deden Thomas Jr. and Wyoming point guard Obi Agbim are also in the portal. Davidson was a second-team all-MWC pick this season while Agbim and Thomas Jr. both received third-team honors.
Thomas Jr. is rated the No. 3 overall player in the portal by 247Sports. Agbim checks in at No. 9 nationally with Davidson at No. 10.
The college basketball transfer portal opened Monday. The portal will close April 22.
According to ESPN, more than 750 players entered the portal on opening day.

Jets coaches try to calm the situation in wake of Justin Fields' comments
According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, New York Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields did not throw a pass that traveled 10 yards in the air over the club's first two preseason games. Some have voiced concerns about the Jets' passing attack with Fields in the lineup, but he insisted while speaking with reporters on Tuesday that he's "fine with taking eight-yard completions every play." On Wednesday, Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand addressed Fields' comment. "He's going to play the play the way the defense allows him to play it," Engstrand said about Fields, per Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. "So if they're going to allow him to take a shot down the field, he's going to take it. If they don't allow him, he's going to check the ball down, and we'll move on to the next play. We're all good with that." Fields completed just one of five passes for four yards in the Jets' 31-12 loss to the New York Giants on Saturday. According to Fox Sports, he connected on four of nine pass attempts for 46 yards across his first two preseason appearances of the summer. Despite such lackluster numbers, first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn suggested on Tuesday that he is ignoring "the noise that happens on the outside" regarding the team's passing offense. On Wednesday, Jets passing game coordinator Scott Turner praised Fields for knowing when to take a checkdown and when to challenge an opposing defense. "I think you've seen a lot of quarterbacks in this league, Josh Allen pops into mind, who really cut down his turnovers last year and won MVP by not always trying to make the big huge play, but make the right play. Justin has done a nice job with that," Turner said. ESPN stats show that Fields averaged 6.9 yards per pass attempt over six starts and 10 appearances with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. Per Pro Football Reference, 22 qualified quarterbacks had a better yards per pass attempt average for the 2024 campaign. Dan Graziano of ESPN noted Wednesday that the $10M guaranteed that the Jets owe Fields for 2026 "won't prevent them from" looking for an upgrade at the position next year if he doesn't make "a major leap as a passer." It's still early into this experiment, but there's no sign that such a leap is coming anytime soon.

Joint practices in the NFL can be really heated. Just take for example the one involving the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday, with fights erupting on the field between players from both sides. Even though it’s just a practice session with nothing significant on the line, the competitive juices of players can get in the way and spark fiery moments on the field. If anything, at least no one appears to have been seriously hurt from the multiple altercations reported. However, Packers right tackle Zach Tom was reportedly tossed out of the field after throwing punches at a couple of Seahawks players. Despite all the chaos that transpired between the Packers and the Seahawks, Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald had great things to say about Green Bay. Seahawks head coach sends message to Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers Brady Henderson of ESPN noted that Macdonald started his session with the media after the practice, “by thanking Packers coach Matt LaFleur and the organization for hosting them.” In any case, Macdonald felt good overall about his players. “It’s hard to tell what happened, who said what,” Macdonald shared. “Look, you want your guys to defend their [teammates]. There’s a line. Whether we go past the line, I don’t think we did, which is good. Our guys stayed composed. But some of these things do tend to happen, and however it gets started … hopefully it’s not our guys, but people are going to react to a certain extent. I think our guys handled it pretty well.” The Packers and the Seahawks will still see each other on the field this offseason, as they are scheduled to play in their 2025 NFL preseason finale on Saturday at Lambeau Field.
Browns' Shedeur Sanders addresses controversial Dillon Gabriel comment
Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel raised eyebrows when he spoke with well-known NFL reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala during Cleveland's preseason game at the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 16 and said that "there’s entertainers and there’s competitors...and my job is to compete and that’s what I’m focused on doing." Gabriel later insisted his comments weren't some type of shot at teammate and fellow rookie signal-caller Shedeur Sanders. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Sanders revealed that he and Gabriel have addressed the matter behind the scenes. Sanders also teased that a reporter was "trying to start something" by asking if he believed that Gabriel wasn't referencing the former Colorado star this past weekend: For an article published on Thursday, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic wrote that it was "nonsensical" to think Kinkhabwala set Gabriel up "to take a swipe at a teammate" during what otherwise would've been a rather forgettable on-the-sideline conversation: Gabriel spoke with Kinkhabwala after the 24-year-old completed 13-of-18 pass attempts for 143 yards with a pick-six and a lost fumble against the Eagles. Sanders didn't play in that contest because of an oblique injury, but he will be third in the rotation for Cleveland's preseason finale versus the Los Angeles Rams this coming Saturday as long as he's deemed healthy. Week 1 QB1 Joe Flacco will start against the Rams and will take part in about "20 to 25 plays." Gabriel will then replace Flacco, followed by Sanders. Both Sanders and Gabriel will make their unofficial home debuts on the afternoon of Aug. 23. Sanders completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in Cleveland's preseason opener at the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 8. There continues to be no indication that the Browns will part ways with one of their four main active quarterbacks before Week 1, even though presumed backup Kenny Pickett won't participate in any preseason games because of the hamstring injury he suffered on July 26. That said, Pickett could potentially begin the campaign on injured reserve. Depending on Pickett's health, Saturday's contest at Cleveland's Huntington Bank Field could determine who serves as Flacco's primary backup for the Browns' regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7.
Red Sox promote prospect who has incredible nickname
The Boston Red Sox are expected to call up a prospect who will quickly become known to fans because of his amazing nickname. Ian Browne of MLB.com reported on Thursday that the Red Sox have decided to promote outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, who is the No. 3 prospect in Boston's system. Garcia has yet to play in an MLB game, but many baseball fans are already familiar with the 22-year-old because he has one of the best nicknames of all time: "The Password." How did Garcia end up with that nickname? Because his first name, which is pronounced "JOES-tin-son," is incredibly difficult to spell. Garcia's first name features such a rare structure and combination of letters that it would make an incredibly strong computer password. The Red Sox signed Garcia out of Venezuela in 2019. They signed his brother, Johanfran Garcia, three years later. As Browne notes, Johanfran is the No. 28 prospect in Boston's system, and he also has a great nickname that plays off his brother's. Johanfran's nickname is "The Username." Jhostynxon Garcia has split time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester this season. He has batted .303 with 17 home runs and 56 RBI in 66 Triple-A games.
