Just when everyone thought that the Men's basketball team would save the Oklahoma Sooners football team, or the fans anyways, from continuing to put out a bad product in men's sports, while the women's sports continue to kick ass with softball, basketball, and gymnastics, they fail. They started out and continued as one of the three only unbeaten teams left in the country.
Then, SEC play started, and since then, they are 0-4. Just like they say in college football, the same is true for college basketball this year -- the SEC is just different. It's the best conference in college basketball this year. You would think, coming from the Big 12, that the Sooners would be ready and prepared. I mean, in the last few years, the Big 12 was the best basketball conference. This year, it's the SEC by far.
But the Sooners have not translated that well in conference play. After another loss, this time against the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday night, the Sooners have shown that they are not the team we all thought they were. They were in that game at the end, after being down big at the half. They came back, putting on a show, just to choke it away.
It's sort of the same pilot episode you have seen over and over again, but this one was to their biggest rival, for their first SEC win.
On the bright side, fans are being promised that things will change.
“It was surprising, but at the same time, it’s the flow of the game. In those moments when that happens, we have to come together as a team and stay connected. That has to change, and it will change going forward,” star forward Jalon Moore said after the game.
The Sooners have to figure out how to close the gap on these other teams that really aren't that great. It would be different if they were losing this way to teams like Auburn. Now, granted, they lost to Alabama, a great team, but have lost to teams like Georgia, Texas A&M, and now to Texas.
They have lost four games in a row now, and another loss the same exact way just cannot happen. The Sooners cannot continue to be a team that struggles to shoot from deep, even at home, and turns the ball over an insane amount during the worst times, among many other things they do badly.
If they are promising change, though, hopefully, it will come.
