It was already Penn State basketball’s most successful appearing in The Basketball Tournament.
But the alumni squad known as the Happy Valley Hoopers wanted more, and got it Monday night in Pittsburgh.
The Happy Valley hoopers advanced to the regional final with a 94-83 win over the Stars of Storrs (UConn) Monday evening at the Peterson Events Center.
The first quarter was tight throughout, with Happy Valley leading 24-22 by the end of it.
But in the second quarter, Happy Valley got off to the races, opening up a 40-28 lead.
By halftime, Happy Valley led 49-31.
Myreon Jones led the team with 10 points at the half. Isaiah Brockington (8) John Harrar and Greg Lee (7), weren’t far behind, and Curtis Jones and Sam Sessoms each added six. Happy Valley also played well defensively, holding Storrs to just 3-for-18 from behind the arc in the half.
Happy Valley never looked back in the second half. Lee finished with 19 to lead the Happy Valley Hoopers. The last three of those points got Penn State to the target score of 94, which ended the game. Sam Sessoms added 18, Harrar had 15 and Jones 13.
Penn State will now play in the regional final
