The Bruins had a very successful April 1, re-signing several notable players from last season’s roster.
UCLA finished the day by bringing back Eric Freeny, Xavier Booker, and Brandon Williams. Each player offers a different skill set, but their returns reinforce that UCLA still has a strong core in place before the offseason truly begins. However, there are definitely a few players that UCLA is still waiting on.
One thing is certain: UCLA’s depth is beginning to solidify. With three primary bench players returning for next season, the Bruins now have greater flexibility when it comes to building their starting rotation. UCLA now has a team that is just a few transfers away from being truly special.
UCLA also has Javonte Floyd and Joe Philon arriving as part of this year’s recruiting class. With the Bruins’ depth chart beginning to fill out, it will likely influence how UCLA approaches additional roster moves and constructs its lineup moving forward. Depth is a huge driver in attracting future players.
However, there is still some uncertainty surrounding the roster. Trent Perry and Eric Dailey Jr. have yet to confirm their status for next season, leaving several important questions unanswered about what UCLA’s roster will ultimately look like.
Still, the three players who did return bring meaningful value.
Eric Freeny has proven to be one of the more versatile role players in the Big Ten. His defensive ability alone makes him a difficult matchup for opposing teams. With continued development, Freeny could become an even more impactful player in UCLA’s rotation.
Xavier Booker is arguably the most established player among the three. His ability to score from multiple areas on the court gives UCLA a reliable offensive option in the frontcourt. However, defense remains an area where Booker can still improve, as it was one of the primary critiques of his game last season.
Brandon Williams, like Freeny, brings a defensive-minded presence. Despite often facing players three to four inches taller, Williams consistently competed and held his own throughout the season. With Williams returning, UCLA’s defensive depth immediately looks stronger.
The bottom line is that UCLA now has several important pieces in place as it continues to shape its roster. When players choose to return, it sends a strong message to future recruits and potential transfers about the program's culture.
For the Bruins, this was undoubtedly a big day for the program.
