Report: LSU to hire Murray State's Matt McMahon as men's basketball coach

LSU has found its replacement for Will Wade in Murray State's Matt McMahon, who is set to be named the university's new men's basketball coach, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

McMahon, 43, spent seven seasons with the Murray State Racers, leading the program to four Ohio Valley Conference titles. In three trips to the NCAA Tournament (a likely fourth trip was cancelled due to COVID-19), Murray State twice advanced past the first round, but couldn't earn a spot in the Sweet 16.

In 2019, Murray State pulled off a huge upset when its Ja Morant-led squad beat fifth-seeded Marquette as a 12-seed. More recently, the Racers were on the other side of a Cinderella story when they lost, 70-60, to the 15th-seeded St. Peter's Peacocks on Saturday.

LSU earned a six-seed in the NCAA Tournament after finishing the regular season with a 21-10 record. Wade was fired one day after the Tigers lost in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament due to allegations of several recruiting violations committed by the program. LSU lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to the 11th-seeded Iowa State Cyclones.

McMahon leaves Murray State with a 154-67 record during his tenure. Earlier this month, he was named the OVC Coach of the Year.
