Report: LSU receives notice of allegations within men's basketball, football programs

The LSU Tigers athletics department is under the microscope after receiving a notice Tuesday of allegations that violations occurred in the men's basketball and football programs, according to a report from Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated.

For now, the details of the violations have not been revealed, but ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Tuesday that the allegations made against the basketball program are "significant."

The notice reportedly stems from multiple cases across several years, including some that have already become public.

In 2019, LSU basketball coach Will Wade was suspended indefinitely by the school after Yahoo Sports reported that an FBI wiretap conducted in 2017 caught the coach talking about the "strong-ass offer" he made to a recruit. A year later, HBO aired audio of the recording during a documentary.

In August 2020, NCAA documents obtained by ESPN alleged that Wade either arranged or offered impermissible payments to at least 11 potential LSU recruits.

Despite the mounting evidence, Wade has remained the head coach at LSU and led the team to a 21-10 regular season record this year. The team is scheduled to play its first game in the SEC Tournament on Thursday after earning the fifth seed.

LSU's football program announced self-imposed sanctions in 2020, including a one-year bowl ban, for violations that are reportedly part of the notice the university received Tuesday.
