Rick Pitino and the St. John's Red Storm are building a powerhouse for the 2025–26 season. After a strong 2024–25 campaign and this spring’s headline-making moves, St. John's is shaping up to be one of the preseason favorites to win the NCAA Tournament title.
The Red Storm continue to dominate the NCAA transfer portal, landing one talented player after another. Although the portal officially closed Tuesday night, the window remains open for players who have entered before the deadline but haven’t yet committed to a school.
On Wednesday, St. John's basketball made more headlines as one of its newest additions made an official announcement.
Dillon Mitchell delivered a short but meaningful message, sharing his first appearance in a St. John's uniform with a simple emoji "".
What came after was a message from his new teammate, Zuby Ejiofor.
"Let’s work " Ejiofor said.
Ejiofor began his college career with the Kansas Jayhwaks but played just 5.2 minutes in his lone season in Lawrence.
Over the past two years, he has started 36 games for the Red Storm and finished the 2024-25 season averaging 14.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Ejiofor was named an All-Big East selection in 2024-25.
Mitchell, his new teammate, will bring plenty of experience to the program. He has played in 107 games during stints with the Texas Longhorns and Cincinnati Bearcats. Last season, Mitchell started all 35 games for the Bearcats and averaged 9.9 points per game.
Mitchell is the fifth player to join the St. John's portal class, which is regarded as one of the best in the country. Ian Jackson from the North Carolina Tar Heels and Oziyah Sellers from the Stanford Cardinal are two standout names. The other two are Bryce Hopkins from the Providence Friars and Joson Sanon of the Arizona State Sun Devils..
