Texas A&M Basketball Hosting Coveted Transfer Prospect

As his roster rebuild continues, Texas A&M head coach Bucky McMillan is actively recruiting in the transfer portal. McMillan has targeted some of his former Samford players, but he recently scheduled a visit with one of the top remaining mid-major players in the portal.

North Alabama guard Jacari Lane will visit the Aggies on Friday, he told League Ready’s Sam Kayser. Fourteen schools have reached out to Lane, including 11 high-major programs. Along with Texas A&M, SEC rival Auburn is interested in Lane.

Lane earned 2025 First Team All-Atlantic Sun honors and started all 35 of North Alabama’s games this season. He averaged 17.3 points per game and shot 40.3% on 3-point field goals en route to a share of the Atlantic Sun regular season title.

McMillan had a firsthand look at Lane during Samford’s 97-96 overtime win against North Alabama in November. Lane erupted for a career-high 32 points and tallied five steals against McMillan’s Bulldogs.

While Lane is garnering plenty of high-major interest, Texas A&M is currently his only reported visit. The Aggies have no guards on their current roster, so Lane would instantly become the lead man in Texas A&M’s backcourt. This could be a draw for Lane, as joining the Aggies would guarantee him significant playing time in the SEC.

A Huntsville, Ala. native, Lane could also be drawn to McMillan’s Alabama roots. Before coming to Texas A&M, McMillan spent his entire playing and coaching career in Alabama, his home state.

Lane appears to be Texas A&M’s top transfer target, though the Aggies have also shown interest in several other high-level prospects. Texas A&M has reached out to Charleston forward Ante Brzovic, Syracuse center Eddie Lampkin Jr. and Western Michigan guard Chansey Willis Jr., among others.

McMillan mentioned in his introductory press conference that it would be difficult to build an SEC-level roster in a short period of time, but Lane seems to fit the mold of an SEC-caliber player. Lane’s elite scoring and pesky defense would make him a significant asset in most, if not all, SEC backcourts.

Landing Lane would mark a major step forward for McMillan as he builds Texas A&M’s roster from the ground up. With a nearly empty roster, Lane’s visit is likely the first of many as McMillan works to reload in College Station.
