Texas A&M Takes Risk with Latest Transfer Commit

With the most depleted roster in the SEC, Texas A&M is actively pursuing prospects in the transfer portal. After signing North Alabama star guard Jacari Lane Saturday, the Aggies landed another commit Sunday.

Unlike Lane, Sunday’s commit is not a known commodity. The Aggies signed Kansas forward Zach Clemence, who played just 5.2 minutes per game across three seasons with the Jayhawks.

A four-star recruit out of high school, Clemence showed promise in his freshman season. In the 2021–22 season, Clemence played in 24 games as the Jayhawks won the NCAA Tournament. However, his role diminished over time, as he appeared in fewer games and saw reduced playing time in subsequent seasons.

Since the Aggies have a thin roster, they need to hit on all of their transfer portal signings, which makes Clemence a risky choice. He’s yet to prove himself at the collegiate level, so Texas A&M is relying on his talent to shine in College Station.

Clemence was the 50th-ranked high school prospect in 2021, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. While the Aggies didn’t pursue him out of high school, Clemence received offers from seven high-major programs. A San Antonio native, Clemence’s return to his home state could help spark his career in the SEC.

At Texas A&M, Clemence will see a role bigger than he ever had at Kansas. The 6-foot-11 forward is the only current Aggie taller than 6-foot-7, so he’ll have to be a stable presence inside.

Signing Clemence is a big risk for Texas A&M, given that he is relatively unproven, but it’s one head coach Bucky McMillan had to take. McMillan was hired late in this year’s coaching cycle, so many of the top transfer prospects had already signed with schools by the time McMillan got to College Station.

A recruit of Clemence’s caliber was hard to pass up for McMillan and his staff, especially at this stage of the transfer cycle. Clemence’s size and four-star high school ranking make him an intriguing player, despite his lack of collegiate production.

The Aggies are taking a risk on Clemence, but it’s the type of move they have to make given the state of their roster. If Clemence has a breakthrough year as a redshirt senior in the 2025-26 season, it would be an early highlight of the McMillan era.
