If you haven’t been paying attention to BYU basketball lately, now’s the time to start. With a potential transfer of Texas Tech standout Darrion Williams on the horizon, Kevin Young’s Cougars could be adding the missing piece to a suddenly dangerous Big 12 contender.

Darrion Williams isn’t your average transfer — he’s a First-Team All-Big 12 forward who put up 15.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game last season while leading Texas Tech to the Elite Eight. His court vision, unselfishness, and feel for the game are already drawing NBA eyes, and Kevin Young’s pro-style offense fits him like a glove. Young, fresh off an NBA assistant coaching stint, has retooled BYU’s system into a more spaced, movement-heavy scheme. For a player like Williams — who thrives in rhythm and flow — that’s an ideal match.

BYU has gaps to fill. With recent departures in the backcourt and on the wing, Williams wouldn’t just join the rotation — he’d likely be its focal point. Imagine him flanked by Rob Wright, Richie Saunders, and Dawson Baker, with five-star phenom AJ Dybantsa joining the squad in 2025. BYU doesn’t just want Williams. They need him. And that kind of clarity in role matters when weighing transfer destinations — or deciding whether to bypass the NBA Draft.

Money talks, and BYU has entered the NIL era ready to compete. The Cougars have already secured major commitments with help from a boosted NIL presence, including top-ranked recruit Dybansta. With financial support, national exposure, and a spot in one of the nation’s premier conferences, Provo suddenly looks like a launchpad, not a layover.

Williams is still testing NBA Draft waters, but entering the portal signals serious interest in returning to college. If he does, BYU is positioned to strike. A commitment would turn heads—and maybe even turn BYU into a dark horse Final Four pick.

Stay tuned, Cougar Nation. The next big name in Provo might just be Darrion Williams.
