The East Region of the 2026 NCAA Tournament feels less like a standard bracket and more like a collision of college basketball history.

Look across the teams and the sideline personalities and it reads like a who’s who of the sport. Duke, UConn, Kansas, Michigan State and St. John’s all land here. Several national champions. Multiple Hall of Fame coaches. NBA lottery talent scattered throughout the region.

It’s also arguably the most balanced region in the entire tournament. There are legitimate championship contenders across several seed lines, dangerous mid-majors capable of creating chaos and multiple matchups that could easily become instant March Madness classics.

Simply reaching the Sweet 16 out of the East may feel like winning a war.

Legendary Coaches Dominate The East Region

Few regions in tournament history have this many iconic coaching figures.

Rick Pitino at St. John’s, Bill Self at Kansas, Tom Izzo at Michigan State and Dan Hurley at UConn have defined eras of college basketball. Their combined resumes include multiple national championships, countless conference titles and decades of NCAA Tournament success.

Even beyond the headliners, the coaching depth is impressive. Jamie Dixon continues to keep TCU competitive. Johnny Dawkins has quietly built a dangerous UCF program. Ben Jacobsen has made Northern Iowa one of the most respected mid-major programs in the country.

UCLA’s Mick Cronin is another proven tournament coach who has taken teams deep into March before, adding yet another experienced sideline presence in the region.

The chess matches on the sidelines could be just as fascinating as the action on the court.

The Star Power Runs Through Duke

At the center of the region sits Duke, the No. 1 overall seed in the entire tournament.

The Blue Devils ride into March Madness behind freshman star Cameron Boozer, who has been one of the most dominant players in the country all season. Boozer averaged 22.5 points and 10.2 rebounds while helping lead Duke to an ACC Tournament title.

The Blue Devils have also had to navigate injuries throughout the season, particularly at the point guard position. Depth pieces have stepped up in big moments, and Duke’s roster still features one of the deepest collections of talent in the field.

But in a region loaded with elite competition, Duke will be tested quickly.

Complete East Region First Round Matchups

Thursday Games

No. 8 Ohio State vs No. 9 TCU
This matchup could be one of the most competitive games of the opening round. Ohio State is led by senior guard Bruce Thornton, who averaged more than 20 points per game and has carried the Buckeyes offensively all season. TCU arrives battle-tested out of the Big 12, giving this game the feel of a heavyweight fight between two teams capable of making a run.

No. 1 Duke vs No. 16 Siena
Siena earned its spot by winning the MAAC tournament and enters with momentum. Still, the challenge of facing the tournament’s overall No. 1 seed is enormous. Duke’s length, talent and depth make the Blue Devils one of the toughest matchups in the entire field.

No. 6 Louisville vs No. 11 South Florida
This could become one of the highest-scoring games of the first round. South Florida ranks among the nation’s top scoring teams and rebounds extremely well on the offensive glass. Louisville relies heavily on perimeter shooting and can pile up points quickly if the three-point shot is falling.

No. 3 Michigan State vs No. 14 North Dakota State
Michigan State enters with one of the nation’s most disciplined defensive units under Tom Izzo. North Dakota State has been one of the most consistent programs in the Summit League and has pulled tournament surprises before, but slowing the Spartans’ physical style will be a major challenge.

Friday Games

No. 7 UCLA vs No. 10 UCF
UCLA has talent across the roster but has been one of the more unpredictable teams in the field this season. UCF counters with experienced guard play, led by Themus Fulks, one of the most underrated playmakers in the country. If the Knights control tempo, this could become a very tight contest.

No. 2 UConn vs No. 15 Furman
UConn enters the tournament with championship expectations despite a late-season stumble in the Big East title game. Furman earned its bid through the Southern Conference and will try to lean on disciplined offense and perimeter shooting to stay competitive.

No. 5 St. John’s vs Northern Iowa
St. John’s arrives red hot after winning the Big East tournament, including a convincing victory over UConn in the championship game. Rick Pitino’s group has played some of its best basketball in the final stretch of the season. Northern Iowa, however, has built a reputation for slowing games down and frustrating opponents with tough defense.

No. 4 Kansas vs No. 13 Cal Baptist
Kansas enters March with one of the most electric freshmen in the country in guard Darryn Peterson. Cal Baptist counters with one of the nation’s top scorers, Dominique Daniels, who averages more than 23 points per game and has shown the ability to erupt for huge scoring nights.

Underrated Players And Teams Worth Watching

Several players outside the spotlight could quickly become tournament stars.

Cal Baptist guard Dominique Daniels is one of the most explosive scorers in the country and capable of taking over a game. UCF guard Themus Fulks quietly averages over six assists per game and has been one of the most consistent floor generals in the region.

Ohio State’s Bruce Thornton may also be one of the most underrated players in the entire tournament field after an All-American caliber season.

South Florida’s Wes Enis, a Division II transfer, has emerged as the Bulls’ leading scorer and helped drive their late-season surge.

Why The East Could Be The Tournament’s Best Region

The East Region blends everything that makes March Madness special.

Historic programs. Legendary coaches. Future NBA stars. Dangerous underdogs.

Multiple teams here believe they can reach the Final Four, and the path through the bracket offers potential blockbuster matchups at every stage.

If the tournament delivers its usual drama, there is a strong chance that some of the most unforgettable games of March will come out of this region.
