Tyson Walker reached the 1,000-point mark for his Spartan career on Monday night. And here’s the basket that did it.

Michigan State basketball once again looked like the team we all thought they could be. After a slow start in the first half, the Spartans pulled away in a big way, beating Oakland 79-62. Tyson Walker led the way for the Spartans with 14 points, two rebounds, and five assists.

This game was great for Michigan State for many reasons, but arguably the greatest part of the game was the milestone Tyson hit during the game.

Tyson Walker joins the 1,000-point club

Midway through the second half, Tyson knocked down a fadeaway jump shot in the corner while he was fouled. This difficult shot he hit put him in the 1,000-point club for his Michigan State career. Walker is now the 54th player in program history to reach this milestone.

I honestly can’t think of a more deserving player to accomplish this than Walker either. There’s no telling what this team would be without him. Michigan State was a very average team the last two seasons. In some people’s eyes they barely even made the NCAA Tournament. There’s a realistic chance our NCAA Tournament streak would no longer exist if Tyson never transferred to Michigan State. For that reason alone, Tyson deserves this accomplishment.

Now looking at this season, the Spartans need Tyson now more than ever. He is by far the best player on this team and can win us games by himself. We’ve seen countless examples of our team struggling all night just for Walker to go nuclear for three minutes to bring us back into the game. Without Tyson this year, MSU would not have the goals and aspirations that it currently has.

Now I just hope this isn’t the last thing Tyson accomplishes this year. Big Ten championships, a Final Four, and a national championship are all still possible this year. With the way the team has been playing, I’m starting to get my confidence back in these goals again. And as long as Tyson Walker is on this team, I love its chances at accomplishing everything this season.
