UConn coach Dan Hurley faced an unexpected and unfathomable situation. On The Dan Patrick Show on Thursday, the 2x championship-winning coach did not hold back about the turbulent landscape of collegiate basketball. Hurley pointed out that while he handles the film sessions and development, he delegates the financial discussions to an executive.

General manager Tom Law manages the actual figures and informs Hurley of the ongoing progress. Of late, the reality check of the sport has progressed from bad to worse. Hurley avoids these personal negotiations to focus on the collective identity and development of the squad. Furthermore, he said high majors are expected to increase spending during the upcoming offseason. This trend makes tournament qualification increasingly difficult for mid-major programs.

The glaring issue caught the eye when Dan Patrick asked, "What's the most money somebody has asked you for?" "Four and a half million, I think," Hurley said.

Patrick said, "How does that conversation go?"

"I'll meet with the agents to talk about the vision for the player on the official visit with the transfer or the high school player, they could sit in on how we plan to develop the player," Hurley said.

UConn navigates rising NIL spending (up to $932.5 million across college basketball in 2025-26) and new revenue-sharing rules allowing direct school payments to athletes, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the No. 7 Huskies face the No. 11 Michigan State Spartans on Friday in a Sweet 16 showdown. As of late March, UConn went 17-3 in the Big East Conference and secured a No. 2 seed.

Dan Hurley and company continues its pursuit of another national championship while navigating these evolving financial challenges as the field narrows to 16 teams.
