Washington transfer sets new college basketball NIL record
Forward Great Osobor. Robert Goddin-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Huskies are getting involved in the NIL game in college basketball in a very big way.

Great Osobor, considered the best available player in the portal, committed to Washington on Monday. The reigning Mountain West Player of the Year is following coach Danny Sprinkle from Utah State to Washington, where he will have one more season of eligibility.

The real headline, however, is how much money Osobor will be making after his transfer. Osobor’s name, image, and likeness agreements will pay him $2 million next season, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

That figure certainly will raise some eyebrows. It is the highest-known NIL package in college basketball, and it is a bit of a surprise that it comes from a school such as Washington.

The Huskies, however, are entering the Big Ten this season and will be eager to establish themselves as a tournament contender.

Still, the money involved cannot be considered a surprise considering some of the figures that have been thrown around college football. Osobor’s record probably will not even last all that long at this rate.
