Watch: MSU's Tre Holloman throws down nasty dunk in transition vs. Penn State
USA TODAY Sports

After a mind-bogglingly poor start to their 2023-24 season, Michigan State men's basketball has things rolling now following a dominant 92-61 win over Penn State on Thursday, the Spartans fifth consecutive victory.

MSU was in complete control from the opening tip, and had plenty of highlight reel plays throughout the night. One of those came from sophomore guard Tre Holloman, who has excelled in an increased role this season for the Spartans.

With Michigan State pulling away from the Nittany Lions late in the first half, Holloman put an exclamation point on the Spartans' opening 20 minutes with a nasty, one-handed slam dunk in transition that brought the Breslin Center crowd to its feet. Take a look...

Here's an even better camera angle of Holloman's play (and the assist from Tyson Walker), courtesy of Michigan State men's basketball's official Twitter page:

With MSU freshman point guard Jeremy Fears sidelined for the foreseeable future after he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg over Christmas break, Holloman will see his role increase even further as the Spartans enter the meat of their Big Ten schedule. Fortunately, the sophomore appears more than capable of stepping up to the challenge.

Through 14 games, Holloman is averaging 6.1 points, 3.4 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 0.7 steals per game for the Spartans, while shooting 44.6% from the floor, 42.1% from 3-point range and 80% from the free throw line. That's a significant step up from his freshman season numbers: 1.3 points, 0.9 assists, 0.8 rebounds, 0.1 steals, 38.6 FG%, 23.1 3P%, 60.0 FT%.

Holloman's emergence only strengths a Michigan State backcourt that already features Walker, A.J. Hoggard and Jaden Akins. Wins and losses come tournament time are often determined by guard play, and the Spartans' backcourt stacks up favorably with just about every other team in the country.
