Since about the middle of Big 12 Conference play, the West Virginia Mountaineers have flirted with danger when it comes to their NCAA Tournament outlook. They've lost some games to non-tourney teams, while letting a handful of games slip right through their fingers, even at home.
By taking care of business against TCU on Tuesday, WVU inched closer to solidifying their spot in the 68-team field. The magic number, according to most, is 19. With three games remaining in the regular season in addition to the Big 12 Conference tournament, there are more than enough opportunities for the Mountaineers to reach that mark.
A win on Saturday at BYU would put West Virginia in the driver's seat. It would be their sixth Quad 1 win of the season, and every team that currently has six is projected to make the field. Also, it would provide WVU with plenty of wiggle room. They face Utah on Tuesday, who just fired their coach, and then wrap up the season at home against UCF, who sits near the bottom of the league standings.
Win both games in the Utah two-step? Consider the ticket punched. I'm not sure a loss to UCF and a one and done in the Big 12 tournament would keep the Mountaineers out, although it would make it more nerve-racking for Darian DeVries. The bubble is pretty weak and with WVU's resume, they should still be in pretty good shape unless there are several mid-major bid stealers.
At bare minimum, West Virginia needs to split the two games versus BYU and Utah. If they can, they'll still be in a pretty comfortable position, although not as the previous scenario I just laid out. Dropping both games, believe it or not, isn't the end of the world as they're both considered Quad 1 games as of today. It would just put more weight on the UCF game more than anything. You don't want to have to make a run in Kansas City to be considered safe.

Wisconsin's No. 1 basketball recruit for 2027 schedules unofficial visits with Badgers and Big Ten rivals
The Wisconsin Badgers will get their opportunity to pitch the top high school basketball recruit in the state. According to 247Sports, forward Donovan Davis from Freedom High School in Kaukauna will take an unofficial visit to Madison on September 20. Davis is listed as the No. 1 recruit in Wisconsin by both 247Sports and On3. Both outlets have him as the eighth-ranked power forward in the country and a Top 45 player overall. He shot over 65 percent from the field last year, averaging nearly 23 points and 12 rebounds per game last season. Davis also has visits scheduled this fall with Iowa, Nebraska and Iowa State, and he has offers from Marquette, Syracuse and Cal. Jets QB Justin Fields had 'alarming' practice against Giants
New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields found out he has a long way to go following his performance at Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Giants. Per Connor Hughes of SNY TV, Fields started hot at the practice before struggling during the move-the-ball period. "Very interesting practice for #Jets QB Justin Fields," Hughes posted on X. "He finished 7 of 12 with a TD. 5 of 5 to start practice. Then 0 for 4. Finished 2 of 3 with the really impressive TD to Jeremy Ruckert in red zone (starter 18 yard line). "The offensive performance was a bit alarming in move-the-ball period of practice. Fields Co. had three attempts to get down field. They didn’t gain a first down. Only gained yards twice (two short Breece Hall runs). Three sacks. That needs to be fixed. #Giants defense toyed with NYJ during that period." Some Jets fans online thought Hughes was using hyperbole to characterize the practice, but he doubled down on his judgment of the offense. Fields looked strong on his first and only drive in the Jets' 30-10 win over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night. He went 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards and rushed two times for 14 yards and a touchdown. However, the Giants defense at the joint practice is a much better unit than the short-handed one the Packers trotted out for the first preseason game. Fields' issues seen with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers, with holding the ball too long and not being able to pass consistently downfield, were a factor against the Giants. Following Saturday's game, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said Fields was getting better but had a lot to improve on. Tuesday's practice was a humbling reminder that Fields needs to become a consistent passer if the Jets are going to move the ball on good defenses in the regular season.

Oregon suspends former five-star WR recruit indefinitely
Oregon wide receiver Jurrion Dickey has struggled to live up to expectations in his first two seasons with the Ducks, and he is now in a terrible position heading into 2025 as well. Dickey has been suspended indefinitely by Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning announced on Tuesday. Lanning also suggested that Dickey may not play for the Ducks again. "We have two team rules; that’s respectful, be on time,” Lanning said, via James Crepea of The Oregonian. “There’s some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us and we needed a break from that so we could focus on what’s in front of us right now. "Wishing him nothing but the best, as far as success and want to see him get back to where he can be a contributor somewhere; that might be here that might be somewhere else.” Dickey was a five-star recruit and rated as one of the top wide receivers in the country when he came out of Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, Calif., in 2023. He suffered an injury in his senior year in high school and redshirted as a freshman at Oregon. Dickey has two catches for 14 years during his time with the Ducks. Oregon went 13-1 in Lanning's third season with the program last season. The Ducks lost to eventual national champion Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
Najee Harris may have role reduced after fireworks accident
Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris still has yet to return to action after a July 4 fireworks accident, and it sounds like he does not necessarily have a job guaranteed to him when he does. Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman admitted Tuesday that the team is planning a steady rotation at running back whether or not Harris is available to play in Week 1. First-round draft pick Omarion Hampton, however, is the player who has part of the rotation locked down, not Harris. The Chargers likely intended to use Harris as a part-time back no matter what. However, he certainly cannot have helped himself with his eye injury. The issue was described as superficial after it happened and Harris was expected to be ready for the season, but he is still on the non-football injury list and has yet to participate in a full practice. Harris, 27, is entering his first season with the Chargers after signing with them in March. He can earn up to $9.25 million on his one-year deal, but that will require him to remain part of the rotation with Hampton.
