Madison, WI — On Friday, the Wisconsin basketball coaching staff received massive roster news in an announcement similar to one made by athletes more traditionally thought of as "professionals."
Even before the 2024-25 season started, Wisconsin Badgers head coach Greg Gard knew that he would have to replace most of his starting lineup. With Steven Crowl, Max Klesmit, and John Tonje exhausting their eligibility, all eyes turned to what a pair of rising juniors would do this off-season.
UW got an answer from one of its young stars on Thursday. All-Big Ten Honorable Mention John Blackwell announced he would declare for the 2025 NBA Draft with Gard's full support. If Blackwell does return to college basketball, it will be in Madison.
That left one announcement yet to be made by Nolan Winter.
In a social media post, Winter announced he would be 'back for more" with the Wisconsin Badgers this fall. With two years of NCAA eligibility remaining, the Lakeville, Minnesota native will play at least one more in the Cardinal and White.
If Wisconsin goes on a March Madness run next year, it will almost certainly be thanks to another leap in Winter's development. The Lakeville, Minnesota native recorded a 130.0 offensive rating as a sophomore, according to Kenpom. That was by far the best of any Badgers player and the 20th-best mark by any player in the country.
At 7 feet and 235 pounds, Winter is an inside-out scoring threat that fits perfectly in the Gard-Kirk Penney offense. This past season, he shot 71.5% on twos, taking the large majority of those attempts at the rim, where he connected on 78.5% of his shots, according to BartTorvik. Further out, the Lakveille North High School product drained 35.8% of his 95 attempted three-pointers, finishing above his team's average.
Winter can aim to improve his game in the pick-and-roll this off-season. If he does so, he should improve on his 9.4 points per game and might be the one declaring for the draft this time next year.
