The writing may already be on the wall for Bobby Hurley at Arizona State, but one of his players isn’t ready to let the criticism go unanswered.

Following Arizona State’s recent game, Hurley acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his future with the program, admitting that his players are aware of the situation as his contract nears expiration.

“I think the guys see the writing on the wall,” Hurley said.

Despite the speculation surrounding his job status, Sun Devils guard Moe Odum offered a passionate defense of his head coach — something that’s becoming increasingly rare in the modern era of college athletics.

“He is the greatest coach that’s ever coached me,” Odum said. “I’d go to war with him anytime. I don’t care what anybody says.”

The comments stood out in a sport where coaching uncertainty often leads to silence inside the locker room. Players typically avoid stepping into the public conversation around a coach’s job security, especially late in a season when speculation about potential changes is swirling.

Hurley’s situation at Arizona State has been a topic of discussion for months. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, many around the program expect the university to evaluate the direction of the men’s basketball program once the year concludes.

While Odum’s support highlights the respect Hurley still commands from players inside the locker room, it likely won’t alter the broader reality surrounding the program’s future. Athletic departments rarely base long-term coaching decisions solely on locker-room loyalty, especially when contracts are expiring, and performance expectations remain high.

Still, moments like Odum’s comments offer a glimpse into the relationships that often get lost in the larger business side of college sports. Coaching tenures may be measured by wins, losses, and postseason results, but the impact inside a locker room can sometimes tell a different story.

Whether Hurley returns or Arizona State decides to move in a new direction after the season, the public backing from one of his players is a reminder that even in uncertain times, some coaches still have their locker room firmly behind them.
