South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley has become one of the best coaches in women's college basketball.
Since joining South Carolina in 2008, Staley has led her team to three national championships, including 2024. She has also won four Naismith Coach of the Year awards, all coming since 2020.
In her most recent championship win, Staley and the Gamecocks defeated Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes 87-75, putting an end to Clark's college career. This came just one year after Iowa eliminated South Carolina in the Final Four.
Clark went on to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, selected by the Indiana Fever. And it didn't take long for her to adjust, averaging 19.2 points and 8.4 assists in her rookie season. She was also able to break the WNBA's single-season assist record.
On Thursday, Staley joined Sports Illustrated's podcast "Around the W," where she discussed WNBA fashion and her new book. She also talked about Clark's success as a professional, making a big prediction about the All-WNBA guard.
I would say Caitlin will go down as probably one of the best players to ever grace the league, and she's going to probably do it in half of the time than any other great player," Staley said.
Staley went on to reveal what she thinks makes Clark such a special basketball player.
"When you're able to shoot the ball as well as she does, I think her passing ability, her court vision is second to none," Staley added. "Her ability to deliver the basketball makes her a triple threat. She rebounds the basketball. She's a big guard... She's legitimately six feet, so she sees over you. She's able to get her shot off on anyone, and I think the fact that they surrounded her with just such great talent, a triple-double is going to be a normal thing for Caitlin."

Clark got off to a solid start during her second WNBA season (2025), but suffered a quad strain four games in. The injury has kept her out for the past three games, with a potential return date of June 10.
