“Paige, congratulations, I am so so proud of you,” Fudd said. “This team is so lucky to have you and I can’t wait to see what incredible things you continue to do in the W. … You’re someone that I look up to. You’re an incredible person. … I’ll always be your number one fan.”
In response, Bueckers extended her gratitude to her former teammate and good friend.
“Extremely grateful,” Bueckers said. “Me and Azzi have a great relationship. We got a lot of unconditional love for each other. So, for her to be here to celebrate with me, it means everything.”
Just like what most fans and analysts have expected, Paige Bueckers emerged as the overall No. 1 pick for the 2025 WNBA Draft and was signed by the Dallas Wings. In a statement, she talked about how she felt getting the honor of becoming the season’s first pick.
“You don’t ever want to assume anything in life. Nothing is guaranteed, so for this moment to be here and it to actually happen, it’s nerve-racking,” Paige Bueckers said about being selected No. 1. “You just have a level of excitement, nervousness, bittersweet feeling knowing that my journey at UConn is over but excited for the next one to begin. To be able to share that moment with the people sitting at my table and also the people not sitting at my table, they played a huge role in it.”
In her final season with UConn, Paige Bueckers averaged 20.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 2.1 steals per game, with impressive shooting percentages of 54.3% from the field, 43.2% from three-point range, and 88.8% from the free-throw line.
