The city of Hopkins will change its name to Paige Bueckers next month to honor the former resident and No. 1 WNBA draft pick.

The Hopkins City Council adopted a motion to rename the city Paige Bueckers, Minnesota on May 16. The day will also mark Bueckers’ WNBA debut with the Dallas Wings.

Bueckers, who helped lead the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team to an NCAA championship this year, is a Hopkins native. Before joining the Huskies, Bueckers graduated from Hopkins High School and was the No. 1 recruit in the country.

“Paige Bueckers made a name for herself as a Hopkins High School basketball player, becoming known as one of the best to ever do it at the high school level in Minnesota and moving on to the University of Connecticut,” the motion reads.

The motion also encourages local businesses to mark the occasion with events and watch parties.
