Iowa's Caitlin Clark has Pete Maravich's record in her sights

Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark has more scoring records in her sights, even though the biggest of them all might need to come with an asterisk.

Clark broke former Washington star Kelsey Plum's NCAA women's scoring record on Feb. 15 and sits at 3,617 career points with two regular-season games remaining.

According to ESPN, Clark needs 33 points to pass Kansas' Lynette Woodard's women's major college record of 3,649 points from the pre-NCAA era of women's college basketball and 51 points from passing LSU's Pete Maravich, who holds the career scoring record for NCAA Division I men and women with 3,667 points.

Iowa (24-4, 13-3 Big Ten) is ranked No. 6 heading into Wednesday's game at Minnesota and closes out the regular season on Sunday at home against No. 2 Ohio State, which will also be Senior Night for the Hawkeyes.

Clark, who is averaging 32.1 points, has had several distinct advantages in her career over both Woodard and Maravich, who both played before college basketball adopted the 3-point line in the 1986-1987 season.

Clark's advantage over Maravich is even more pronounced — "Pistol Pete" only played three seasons for LSU from 1967 to 1970 because freshmen weren't eligible to play in the NCAA until 1972.

Maravich's family has said they are fans of Clark, but not necessarily of her breaking the record.

"The circumstances are so different that it's hard to say it's really the same record," Maravich's son, Jaeson Maravich, told Yahoo Sports. "I don't want to make it seem like I'm bashing her because I'm not. I just find it to be an apples-to-oranges comparison."

Maravich averaged a staggering 44.2 points over 83 games in three seasons playing for his father, LSU head coach Press Maravich. Clark has averaged 28.2 points through 128 games.
