The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team used tough defense to beat the UConn Huskies 62-48 in the Final Four Friday night. With the win, they have secured their spot in the national championship game. South Carolina will look to win their fourth National Championship on Sunday.

Defensive Pressure Shut Down UConn’s Stars

South Carolina’s defense was the biggest difference in the game. The Gamecocks limited UConn’s top scorers, including Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong, forcing difficult shots throughout the night. Fudd shot 3-15 from the field and Fudd Stonng 4-16. South Carolina’s physical defense disrupted UConn’s offense, preventing the Huskies from building momentum.

Control of the Boards

Rebounding played a major role in the outcome. South Carolina consistently won the battle on the glass, limiting UConn’s second-chance opportunities while creating extra possessions of their own. The Gamecocks outrebounded the Huskies 47-32

Guard Ta’Niya Latson delivered a standout performance with 11rebounds, along with crucial scoring and defensive plays that impacted the game. She also scored 16 points in the game. Winning the rebounding battle helped the Gamecocks dictate the pace of the game.

Closed Out the Game

The game was tight through three quarters, but South Carolina took control late. The Gamecocks outscored UConn 18–9 in the fourth quarter. UConn’s offense stalled while South Carolina converted free throws and defensive stops to seal the win. Once South Carolina built a double-digit lead in the final minutes, UConn could not recover.

Final Thoughts

South Carolina put together a good defensive game plan to shut down UConn’s offense, holding the Huskies to 31.1% shooting from the field and 28.6% from three-point land. South Carolina also did a great job getting to the free-throw line, shooting 18-for-22, compared to UConn’s 4-for-6. Now the Gamecocks wait for the Texans and UCLA winner.

A heated exchange occurred immediately after South Carolina’s victory, involving Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley, reportedly over a misunderstanding about a pregame handshake between the coaches.
