UConn Huskies superstar sophomore guard Paige Bueckers went down with a significant knee injury in a win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Dec. 5 and was on track to miss between six and eight weeks of the season because of that setback.
According to Katie Barnes of ESPN, Bueckers underwent surgery Monday to fix an anterior tibial plateau fracture and lateral meniscus tear in her left knee. She is expected to remain sidelined for roughly eight weeks.
As Alexa Philippou noted for the Hartford Courant, Bueckers made history earlier this year when she became the first freshman to win the Wooden Award, the USBWA’s Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, the Naismith Trophy and the Associated Press women’s basketball player of the year award after she averaged 20.0 points per game while shooting 52.4% from the field and 46.4% from three-point land.
Per Barnes, Bueckers was leading the Huskies in points, assists and steals at the time of her injury. Without her, UConn fell to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets but then earned a win over the UCLA Bruins.
