Wisconsin Women’s Basketball: Exciting Marquette Rivalry Renewed After 8-Year Hiatus
Wisconsin Women's Basketball: Exciting Marquette Rivalry Renewed After 8-Year Hiatus 1 Southern Indiana’s Tori Handley (4) steals from Wisconsin’s Ronnie Porter (13) as the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles play the Wisconsin Badgers during the second round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament at Screaming Eagles Arena in Evansville, Ind., Monday, March 25, 2024.

The Wisconsin women’s basketball program will renew the I-94 rivalry for the next three seasons after coming to an agreement.

Marquette and Wisconsin have long been locked into the I-94 rivalry, which has become arguably one of the most well known rivalry between colleges in particular on the men’s side. The two teams have not played each other since 2017 when Marquette won 88-65 at home which ended a nine year tradition of the matchup  being played.

The two teams have met a total of 11 times in the past with Marquette leading the overall record with six wins. The Golden Eagles have won the last three games in a row against the Wisconsin women’s basketball team, which led to the rivalry fizzling out for the team over the last eight seasons.

While the Wisconsin women’s basketball team might not be in the same position as Marquette, but the Badgers adding bigger games to the schedule is a great sign. Wisconsin has put a foot into the door of success with coach Robin Pingeton and a new-look roster moving forward. Playing against elevated competition and in games that fans have been looking to watch is another positive step forward for the program.

How Can the Wisconsin Women’s Basketball Team Handle Season One Under Coach Pingeton?

Wisconsin Women's Basketball: Exciting Marquette Rivalry Renewed After 8-Year Hiatus 2 Missouri women’s basketball coach Robin Pingeton speaks to the crowd of Missouri Tigers basketball fans on the Francis Quadtriangle during Mizzou Madness on Oct. 6, 2023, in Columbia, Mo.

After hiring a new head coach, allowing nearly the entire roster to exit in the transfer portal, and retooling the strategies on the court, the Wisconsin women’s basketball team is nearly ready to prepare for the upcoming season.

New head coach Robin Pingeton has brought with her a new roster that has primarily been constructed through the transfer portal and international signings. Pingeton, a former top coach in women’s college basketball for Missouri, has helped rebuild programs in the past and now enters the first year with Wisconsin under pressure.

The Badgers finished 13-17 last season and failed to make any postseason tournaments after losing the first round of the Big Ten Conference tournament. Wisconsin also lost one of the top players in the country in Serah Williams, who was a sure bet to leave after the resignation of former coach Marisa Moseley. Williams has since joined UCONN and currently is projected to be a top-10 pick in the WNBA Draft.

For the Wisconsin women’s basketball team the upcoming season will not only see a renewal of a tough rivalry, but also potentially another tough year for the fans. The Wisconsin women’s basketball team still lacks size across the board and while the Badgers have been doing all the right things recruiting and scheduling wise, what the results on the court will look like are still a question mark.
