Hookem Horns! As a native Texan, That is all I hear every day due to the popularity of the Texas football program. Love or hate them, the Longhorns produce good NFL talent and have done so again this year. Adonai Mitchell was a three-star wide receiver out of Tennessee and committed to Georgia. Immediately as a freshman, Mitchell made an impact, starting in 12 out of 15 games. He amassed 29 catches for 426 yards and four touchdowns, including the national championship game-winner.

Injuries riddled Mitchell’s sophomore season, but he was able to contribute in the playoffs, where he again made a game-winning touchdon. Mitchell transferred to the University of Texas to live closer to his daughter and became a star. This past season, he amassed 55 catches, 845 yards, and 11 touchdowns. Mitchell has great speed, hands, and body control, but can he be a franchise wide receiver? Let’s dig into the film!

Mitchell’s Strengths

• Good top-level long speed to be an immediate contributor to the downfield threat;
• Especially vs. off coverage, his strides are unique, long, and quick;
• Eats vs Off Coverage. He is almost unguardable if not deferred or knocked off his route;
• His best routes are post routes, Go routes, digs, comebacks, and deep crossers vs. off-coverage;
• Great strong body control and ball tracking skills when the ball is in the air;
• If Pressed shows great late hands to win contested catches;
• Big Game performer. Game Winning TDS in multiple college football playoff games.

Mitchell’s Weakness

• When facing press coverage, it only gets slightly separated from the defender, leading to a contested catch;
• He can get jammed at the line of scrimmage. Adding weight and strength would help get off-press coverage better;
• Not much twitch in his movements leads to wasted motion in routes that require him to break down and sink his hips;
• Lack of yards after the catch threat.

Bottom Line on Adonai Mitchell

Adonai Mitchell is a skilled wide receiver with excellent height, weight speed for the position. I project Mitchell to be most valuable as a prototypical vertical X Wide Receiver to attack defenses. My NFL pro comparison was Former Miami Dolphins first-rounder DeVante Parker.

Mitchell’s great long strides, catch radius, and body control make him a valuable player. Both can stretch the field vertically without elite speed, consistently point the football, and are comfortable with defenders hip to hip. However, like Parker, Mitchell sometimes struggles to get in and out of his breaks due to a lack of sudden twitch in his movement skills. Also, Mitchell has a linear frame and needs to put on weight to get stronger and get off-press better. Mitchell would benefit greatly from playing next to an established number-one wide receiver to take pressure off him while developing. The Bills, Ravens, and Cowboys are examples of teams that could use an outside wideout like Mitchell and thrive.
