Background

Coming out of high school in Washington DC, Olumuyiwa "Olu" Fashanu was a three-star recruit and the No. 32 offensive tackle prospect in the country, per 247Sports. He held offers from various Power Five programs including Alabama, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Oregon before committing to Penn State.

In 2023, Fashanu was named the Rimington-Pace Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year, first-team All-American, and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors from the coaches and media. He also earned academic All-Big Ten honors. Fashanu started 21 of his 29 games played for the Nittany Lions, all at left tackle.

According to PFF, Fashanu allowed 10 pressures and zero sacks across 733 pass-block snaps in 2023. Among 253 FBS offensive tackles to play at least 500 snaps in 2023, Fashanu ranked 15th in overall PFF grade, 44th in run-block grade, and fourth in pass-block grade.

Strengths

  • Big, strong, and long with a wide frame that's hard to get around
  • Has an innate feel for pass protection
  • Excellent at using his length to control the rep in pass protection
  • Smooth hips that settle into anchor with ease
  • Absorbs power easily through hand usage and impressive core strength
  • Meets powerful bull rushers with smooth footwork, low pad level, and purposeful hands
  • Special movement abilities are constantly on display in pass protection
  • Smooth footwork and long strides allow him to mirror even the best pass rushers

Weaknesses

  • Generally raw as a run blocker
  • Lacks the finishing mentality desired in a run-blocker
  • Struggles to sustain and drive run blocks once latched
  • Not able to dictate direction or define running lanes often
  • Struggles to change direction in space
  • Gets too tall at times, playing with fire in the leverage battle

Final Thoughts and Chicago Bears Fit for Olu Fashanu

Fashanu currently has a mid-first-round grade from our team. Looking around other draft boards, he seems to have a top-10 grade. When grading a player, I separate their pass-blocking reps from their run-blocking reps. As a pass blocker, the film grades out to a top-five talent. But as a run blocker, the film grades out to a top-100 talent. Pass blocking ability will always be valued more highly, but his run-blocking technique and demeanor will need to improve at the NFL level.

On tape, Fashanu is a pass protector who's much more jazz than heavy metal. He wins in pass protection with excellent arm length, savvy hand usage, and an immovable anchor. His run blocking leaves a lot to be desired, though. While his athleticism shines in pass reps, it diminishes in the run-blocking reps. At times, he seems unsure or hesitant to initiate and use his full power as a run blocker. His ceiling is that of an All-Pro while his floor is a capable starter. With his pass-blocking skills, he's sure to start in the NFL for a long time.

Fashanu would be a great addition to the Chicago Bears offensive line, but I'm not sure that it would make sense to use the No. 9 pick to replace Braxton Jones. While Jones has his warts, he appears to be an average to above-average left tackle on one of the cheapest starting contracts in football. While Fashanu would surely fit on any team, I'm not sure the Bears have a need for his services over those of a high-end wide receiver or edge rusher.
