Strengths

Despite having a tall frame for an interior lineman, Ratledge excels at keeping his pads low and maintaining proper leverage to control opposing defenders at the point of attack. He uses his size and power to absorb bull rushes, keeping a wide, active base and refusing to give any ground. Ratledge has shown the ability to effectively read complex pass-rushing games with switching defenders, passing off and picking up the right assignments to keep his quarterback clean. He’s got enough athleticism to climb to the second level, and his size allows Ratledge to engulf back-seven defenders to spring ball-carriers for big gains. A highly experienced player with a ton of reps under his belt against top competition.

Weaknesses

Defenders who are active and violent with their hands can give Ratledge trouble, and losing the hand-fighting battle early in the rep can lead to playing catch-up and overcompensating, getting him off-balance and causing him to reach to maintain contact. While his starting experience is valuable as a mainstay at right guard, Ratledge doesn’t have the versatility of other interior blockers in this class, having only started at one position throughout his college career.

Final Analysis

Ratledge is huge, athletic and powerful, with a ton of experience against the best defensive trench talent the college ranks have to offer. He lacks positional versatility, and needs to improve his hand usage, but Ratledge should be a plug-and-play starter at right guard who can make an immediate impact at a position he knows well.
