Malachi Moore NFL Draft Profile

  • College: Alabama
  • College Position: Slot Corner / S
  • Ideal NFL Position: Deep Safety
  • Year / Age: 5th-Year Senior / 23 (turns 24 in September)
  • Draft Projection: 5th-7th Round
  • Where I'd Take Him: 4th Round

Background

Malachi Moore was born in Trussville, Alabama, and attended Hewitt-Trussville High School, where he switched between cornerback and safety. As a senior, he was selected for the 2020 All-American Bowl and logged 80 tackles with four picks. As a four-star recruit per 247sports, Moore committed to Alabama and started immediately as a true freshman for the Crimson Tide. Injuries cut his freshman season short before the start of the College Football Playoff.

In his five years at Alabama, Moore became a staple in Nick Saban's defense and accumulated 170 tackles, three sacks, seven interceptions, and 21 pass breakups. He was First-Team All-SEC in 2024 and Second-Team All-SEC in 2020.

Strengths

  • Versatile Defender: Moore has logged over 3,100 snaps in his career at Alabama, and he's split those snaps between slot corner, free safety, strong safety, and outside cornerback. His experience makes him a potential impact starter immediately for an NFL team.
  • Quickness: Moore displays good play speed and foot speed when defending in press or zone coverage. His lateral agility allows him to recover quickly and break on routes in front of him.
  • Awareness: Moore mastered a complicated scheme under Nick Saban. His ability to rotate in coverage and his zone instincts make him one of the more well-rounded prospects in this year's class.

Weaknesses

  • Consistent Tackling: Moore prefers to dive at knees or lower his shoulder to bring down ball carriers instead of wrapping up when playing in the box.
  • Play Strength: Moore's more compact size tends to get gobbled up by larger blockers and erase him from run plays.
  • Long Speed: Though his short-area burst is impressive, there are times on tape when Moore is beaten deep by long-striding receivers and surrenders big plays.
  • Health Questions: Moore missed the team's playoff run as a freshman due to a back injury. He also played through an injury for most of his final season, missing the bowl game due to surgery on an undisclosed injury.

Final Thoughts and Chicago Bears Fit for Malachi Moore

Malachi Moore is an undervalued prospect in this year's upcoming NFL Draft. On paper, he has the accolades and credentials to be a Day 2 pick, but most outlets have him lasting well into Day Three.

Moore was the heart and soul of a very talented Alabama defense, and after his Freshman season, many thought he was en route to being the next Minkah Fitzpatrick for the Crimson Tide. Though he fell off a bit, Moore still has plenty of tape to suggest he'll be a viable NFL starter for a long time. His play speed and tenacity are up to NFL standards, but his play strength will make him a liability in the run game.

For much of his career at Alabama, and particularly under Nick Saban, Moore was a slot cornerback. He shifted back to safety in 2024 and responded with two interceptions (most since his freshman season with three) and eight passes defensed (most in his career). He's got the potential to be a ball-hawking playmaker for a team if appropriately utilized, though he'll need to be schemed around to avoid significantly unfavorable matchups.

I like Malachi Moore a lot as a day-three option for the Bears. He can play special teams and still has room for growth in the defensive backfield. At worst, he can be an interesting wrinkle to implement into Dennis Allen's scheme on obvious passing downs.

Pro Comp: Micah Hyde
