Background

Mason Graham, from Anaheim, California, was a multi-sport athlete during his high school years at Servite High School. In addition to starring on the football field, Graham dominated on the wrestling mat, becoming a two-time Trinity League heavyweight champion. This wrestling background has been instrumental in his development as a football player, particularly in areas like leverage, balance, and hand usage, all of which are critical to his dominance on the defensive line.

Initially rated between a three-star and four-star recruit (per ESPN and 24/7), Graham’s ascent to college football stardom is a testament to his relentless work ethic and growth. He committed to Michigan in September 2021 and quickly made a name for himself in Ann Arbor. Graham was a freshman sensation in 2022, earning Freshman All-American honors due to his immediate impact on the Wolverines' defensive front. By the end of his sophomore season, Graham had established himself as a cornerstone of Michigan’s defense, known for his ability to control the line of scrimmage and contribute against both the run and the pass.

Graham improved each season of his college career, generating 45 total tackles and 3.5 sacks in his standout junior campaign. His consistent play and development earned him first-team All-Big Ten honors, as well as recognition as one of the top defensive tackles in the country. Graham has posted back-to-back seasons with a 90+ PFF grade, led by his 92.4 run defense grade in 2024.

Strengths

  • A quick first step allows him to generate immediate disruption
  • Strong upper body to engage offensive linemen and control the point of attack.
  • He possesses a strong lower body to hold his ground and maintain gap integrity.
  • Violent and active hands allow him to disengage from blockers efficiently.
  • Heavy hands that visibly jolt offensive linemen
  • High awareness and instincts, often diagnosing plays quickly and reacting accordingly.
  • Relentless effort on every snap, consistently pursuing plays downfield.
  • Effective in multiple defensive schemes, capable of playing various techniques along the defensive line

Weaknesses

  • While disruptive, he has been more of a disruptor than a finisher, with only nine career sacks.
  • Good, but not an elite athlete
  • Inconsistencies in maintaining a low pad level can occasionally reduce his effectiveness.
  • Marginal arm length may limit his ability to disengage from longer-armed offensive linemen.
  • Struggles to hold up against double teams at times

Final Thoughts and Chicago Bears Fit for Mason Graham

Mason Graham is a rare prospect who combines a high floor with a sky-high ceiling. He should be able to contribute immediately as a rookie with the potential to be a perennial all-pro player. His size, strength, and technical prowess make him a valuable asset against the run and pass. While he may not possess elite athletic traits, his consistency, football intelligence, and above-average athleticism should allow him to have a long career.

As a pass rusher, Graham’s repertoire includes an effective bull rush complemented by developing moves like a swim and hand swipe. While he is more of a disruptor than a finisher at this stage (only nine career sacks), his strength, quick first step, and relentless motor suggest untapped production potential.

One of Graham's standout qualities is his consistency. His technique and violent hand usage create constant knockback, allowing him to control the line of scrimmage. Despite some limitations in his pad level and marginal arm length, Graham's compact frame aids his ability to leverage blocks and maintain balance.

Without a coaching staff in place, we don't yet know what defensive scheme the Chicago Bears will use in 2024. That being said, Graham is a prospect who should thrive in any scheme. His best fit will be in an even front, where he can be an ideal 3-technique, shooting gaps and getting upfield. But if they opt for an odd front, he can also fit as a 2-gapping 5-tech with his stout anchor and ability to stack and shed.

Regardless of the scheme, Graham would be an excellent fit as a disruptive force on the interior defensive line. With his ability to anchor against the run and push the pocket from the inside, Graham can amplify the players around him. He would instantly make Gervon Dexter's and Montez Sweat's jobs easier and elevate the entire defense.
