Smael Mondon Jr. has one of the most peculiar profiles in the 2025 NFL draft class. A linebacker with his combination of impressive athletic traits and success at an elite program like Georgia typically receives a first-round grade. Yet, his scouting report leads to questions about his upside at the next level, which is why he’s ticketed to become a middle-round selection.

Perhaps the biggest concern isn’t even an on-field issue, though. The defender struggled to shake off a foot injury across his last two years with the Bulldogs. It could help explain why he never reached the heights that seemed possible early in his UGA career.

“I just want to show my foot is not a problem. It might be something that might scare some teams away, but it’s not an issue and it’s not going to be an issue,” Mondon told DawgNation’s Mike Griffith at the Senior Bowl. “I’m feeling as good as ever, and I just want to show them what I’m capable of doing.”

Mondon could emerge as one of the class’s biggest steals if the foot problems are indeed a thing of the past and he finally enjoys the breakout many expected during his time at Georgia.

Bottom Line on Smael Mondon Jr.

Mondon appeared on the fast track to superstardom at the end of the 2022 season. As a sophomore, he emerged as a core piece for a Georgia defense that laid the foundation for the team’s run to a national championship. He finished the campaign with 76 total tackles, including eight for a loss, along with a sack and an interception.

The Georgia native never took another significant step forward, though. How much that plateau stemmed from his foot injury is the biggest uncertainty on his scouting report, but his strong pre-draft athletic testing painted a promising picture about his current health.

At his best, Mondon is a versatile playmaker capable of playing anywhere at the linebacker level. He’s a terrific read-and-react player, which makes up for a lack of play-reading skill. He’s also shown superb man coverage skills, even against bigger tight ends.

That skill set, combined with his athleticism, gives him a real chance to become a three-down starting linebacker within two or three NFL seasons.

It’s fair to question whether he’ll ever reach that peak outcome, however. The foot injury sapped his impact across his final two collegiate campaigns. While he’s expressed confidence that it’s firmly in the rearview mirror, it’s possible that staying 100 percent healthy will prove difficult.

Ultimately, a team will have to accept that risk before drafting him. He’ll be worth taking the boom-or-bust chance for a linebacker-needy team that doesn’t fill the void in the early rounds. Some possibilities include the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, and Tennessee Titans.

Put the entire package together, and Mondon will be one of the most fascinating prospects from this year’s draft to watch over the next five years.
