Fans of the Tennessee Volunteers have endured some tough times between the days of Phillip Fulmer and Josh Heupel, and no era had more cringe-worthy moments that that of Butch Jones.
The Vols' head coach from 2013-17 should be lauded for his energy and enthusiasm, but some of his slogans landed like a wet noodle amid his teams' struggles on the field. From the trash can sideline prop, the "champions of life" comment after the Vols were eliminated from the 2016 SEC East race, and the five-star hearts quote in recruiting, Jones left some Vol fans shaking their heads and many of their rivals chiding in response.
But one of the most oft-repeated Butch moments was the "brick by brick" slogan that Jones put forth not long after he was hired. Jones explained it, understandably, as his desire to build the foundation for a lasting program and that each player is a brick in that foundation. Unfortunately, that foundation was never built on his watch.
Still, that hasn't stopped Tennessee's biggest rival from recently adopting the same slogan, who posted "brick by brick" on Twitter/X on Friday.

Naturally, that drew some quick responses from both Tennessee fans and media members on the popular app.
Are they trolling? Or did this Bama social media person just not know? https://t.co/GYAIeZkOP3 pic.twitter.com/lYAeeXsdqy

Ironically, Bama certainly should know about the Vols' former coach's history. Jones was hired by Nick Saban after the former was fired from Tennessee. He served as a special assistant to Saban and offensive analyst from 2018-2020 before heading to Arkansas State to become their current head coach.
For the first time in decades, Alabama looked mortal in 2024 under first-year head coach Kalen Deboer. But going down a path of slogans doesn't work when you're not backing them up on the field.
Just ask Tennessee fans.
