Athan Kaliakmanis Commits to Rutgers 2024
Nick Wosika-USA TODAY Sports

The transfer portal is a big conversation topic within the college football world. One of the newer recruits for Rutgers through the portal is quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis. Not long after Kaliakmanis posted on X that he is committing to the university, wide receiver, Dino Kaliakmanis also announced his commitment to join the Scarlet Knights. Here is a look back at the quarterback’s time with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and what he brings to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Athan Kaliakmanis’ Time at Minnesota

Kaliakmanis spent three years with the Gophers. He did not play in 2021, but following his redshirt year, he began getting playing time in 2022. The quarterback played in 11 games that year, completing 60 passes out of 11 attempts for 946 yards, according to Sports Reference. Kalia had three touchdowns compared to four interceptions.

In 2023 his playing time increased. He played in 12 games, completing 156 passes for 1,838 yards and 14 touchdowns. He threw nine interceptions this year. Minnesota won just five regular season games in 2023 but was bowl-eligible due to their academics. This put them in the Quick Lane Bowl against Bowling Green. Kaliakmanis entered the transfer portal before this game.

What Kaliakmanis Brings to Rutgers

Right now, Rutgers’ fans can expect Gavin Wimsatt to remain the starting quarterback. Is there always a chance that changes? Sure, there is always competition for positions. Kaliakmanis and Ajani Sheppard will both compete for playing time, just as any player on the roster does.

Rutgers did lose backup quarterback Evan Simon in the transfer portal though, which makes this commitment valuable. If something were to happen to Wimsatt, Kaliakmanis is an experienced quarterback who can step in. Sheppard did play in one game in 2023 where he attempted and completed two passes.

It will be interesting to see what Kaliakmanis’ role ends up being in the 2024 season. Rutgers is coming off of a winning season, following their win over Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl. The structure of the Big Ten will also be entirely different, and the Scarlet Knights will want to keep up that momentum from the 2023 season.

Former Oregon Ducks Strength Coach Aaron Feld Leaving Miami Hurricanes, Mario Cristobal

The Miami Hurricanes lost their strength coach on Saturday as former Oregon Ducks strength and conditioning coordinator Aaron Feld announced that he is stepping away from Miami's program. Feld was hired to work at Oregon by former Ducks coach Mario Cristobal in 2018 as one of the first hires that Cristobal made as the coach at Oregon. While with the Ducks, Feld enjoyed a bit of virality online, thanks in part to his trademark mustache. The former Oregon strength coach coined the catchphrase "Fill The Sleeves," and he also created a 45-day challenge that encouraged his followers to work on building muscle mass in their biceps and triceps. However, Feld followed Cristobal to Miami in 2022 after spending four seasons in Eugene, Oregon. Now, it appears as though Feld and Cristobal are parting ways after the Miami strength coach revealed he will no longer be working for the Hurricanes' football program. Feld announced the news with a heartfelt message that he posted onto social media: "Thank you to the University of Miami and the Hurricane Football program for a great run! I have nothing but love and respect for this football team," wrote Feld in his announcement. "This was a tough decision to have to make, but ultimately the choice was clear. At the end of the day, my wife and kids deserve more fro me than my circumstances allowed, so the only course of action was to change my circumstances. Failing as a husband and a father will never be an option." "Developing a world-class performance team at The U will always be a highlight of my career, and I am leaving the Canes football program in extremely capable hands. I have no doubt they will continue to lead the profession and have great success," Feld continued. Feld did not thank or address Cristobal in his statement, but he did leave a motivational message behind for his former players. "To the players: I love you guys. Serving you every day has made me a better husband, father, and coach. For that I will never be able to thank you enough. Remember, no individual is important than The Team. Stick together, and finish what you started," Feld wrote. Cristobal and Miami hired two assistant strength and conditioning coaches, Nick Tulloch and Houston Owens, prior to Feld's departure from the program. With Tulloch and Owens already working for Miami, it is unclear whether Cristobal will replace Feld by promoting from within or making an outside hire. Prior to working at Oregon and Miami with Cristobal, Feld was part of the Georgia Bulldogs program as the assistant director of strength and conditioning. Feld also volunteered for the Alabama Crimson Tide where he met Cristobal, who worked under Alabama coach Nick Saban for four seasons.

Former Lakers, Clippers Big Man Joins Phoenix Suns in New Career Path

One of the most lopsided trades of the last decade in the NBA was a "hallway" trade between the Lakers and Clippers. NBA veteran Mike Muscala was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Ivica Zubac, a young center at the time who needed development, along with Michael Beasley. In a win-now move for the Lakers in their first season with LeBron James, they gave up on a young center that showed promise, for a stretch big that the Lakers felt could help them get to the playoffs.

Cowboys fans won't like Jerry Jones' update on Micah Parsons standoff

With the regular season approaching, the Dallas Cowboys should be aiming to extend EDGE Micah Parsons promptly. But they're still in no rush to do that. Parsons is set to play on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract in 2025 and has requested a trade. Dallas insists it has no plans to move the 26-year-old pass-rusher but hasn't clarified when it will extend him. Giving him a new deal before the regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4 at 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC, Peacock) seems wise. Dallas owner Jerry Jones, however, said that's not the team's deadline, nor does it need one. "No, not at all," Jones said Wednesday, via Jonah Javad of WFAA-TV in Dallas. "You don't have deadlines when you're playing under contract." Parsons is under contract, but that doesn't mean he must suit up. The EDGE could hold out of regular-season games, like former Cowboys star running back Emmitt Smith did in 1993. The Pro Football Hall of Famer missed the first two games of the season before becoming the league's highest-paid RB at that time. Parsons hasn't said whether he would hold out of regular-season games, but it's apparent he's unhappy with where things stand. "My mouth is closed," Parsons said Wednesday while leaving the practice field in Oxnard, California, via Field Level Media. Jones didn't say if talks with Parsons would resume when the Cowboys return to Texas for their second preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. The matchup is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. The owner still seems confident Parsons will play on the fifth-year option if Dallas doesn't sign him before the start of the regular season. "Again, all you've got to go on are contracts," Jones said. "We are negotiating for a contract. When you do a contract, you would hope that after a negotiation, that's what both the team and player look to see what our obligations are. I have a lot of respect for the contract." Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb played the last years of their rookie contracts. Perhaps Jones wants Parsons to do the same. Still, that would be silly. Paying the four-time Pro Bowler should be a no-brainer for the Cowboys, so they should stop wasting time and show him the money.

Yankees Announce Paul Goldschmidt News After Loss to Twins

The New York Yankees won their first series of August in a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins from Monday to Wednesday, but they're still in trouble. They're only one game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final AL Wild Card spot with six weeks left in the regular season. The Yankees beat the Twins 6-2 on Monday and 9-1 on Tuesday before losing 4-1 on Wednesday, but Tuesday's victory came at a price. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt left early and didn't play on Wednesday, a night in which New York especially needed his bat. The Yankees released an update on Goldschmidt after Wednesday night's game, via MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. The 37-year-old has a low-grade knee sprain with inflammation. He's slashing .276/.331/.422 with 10 homers and 40 RBI over 112 games. Fellow first baseman Ben Rice went 1-for-4 in Goldshmidt's stead on Wednesday. The 26-year-old is slashing .233/.326/.456 with 17 homers and 38 RBI over 101 contests. Paul Goldschmidt comments on injury Goldschmidt said that he hopes he can avoid the IL with a "short-term" absence, via Hoch. While Rice is a high-upside player in his second year, the seven-time All-Star is still a more dependable contact hitter at this point. Goldschmidt is third on the squad with 110 hits, although his younger counterpart's OPS is 30 points higher. The Yankees need the veteran back as soon as possible to help them maintain their Wild Card spot. His presence allows Rice to play catcher, which is optimal given Austin Wells's struggles. The 26-year-old is slashing just .206/.264/.408 with 15 homers and 56 RBI over 94 games. Up next for New York is a road series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Goldschmidt's former team.
