The most infamous co-star feuds in film and TV history

Co-stars don't always need to get along, whether working together on a movie or television projects. In fact, some downright hated each other. Here are 20 notable examples.

1 of 20

20. Lea Michele and Naya Rivera

Lea Michele and Naya Rivera
Fox Broadcasting Company

The two Glee actresses publicly noted the tension that arose as the FOX musical drama grew in popularity, with bad blood developing especially Michele's rise to fame. However, the two generally downplayed any notion of a real feud, but it's long been accepted that they weren't close. Michele, however, posted a picture of her longtime TV classmate following Rivera's tragic drowning death in 2020 at age 33.

19. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny
Twentieth Century Fox

There was actually nothing juicy or intense about the tension these stars of The X-Files experienced during the nine-year run of the show. In fact, it was the length of the massively popular series and the hours the two spent on set that often was the problem. At some point, one will get on the other's nerves, and vice versa. Both admitted to that being case, and their friendship is much stronger since the series ended in 2002.

18. Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio

Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio
Twentieth Century Fox

When the two young stars filmed the Gen X version of Romeo + Juliet (1996), Danes found DiCaprio to be childish, a joker and immature with his on-set, and reportedly, overall behavior at the time. Meanwhile, Leo thought Danes was too serious. The interesting part? At the time, Danes was 16 and DiCaprio 21.

17. Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy
Warner Bros.

The intensity of the grueling process of filming 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, on location in a desert location, seemed to get to this veteran actors. Throw in the fact they are also two strong personalities who bring different styles to their roles, and tension is bound to surface. The good news, once shooting ended, it was reported that Theron and Hardy reflected on the experience and became cordial as a result.

16. Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando

Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando
Universal Pictures

The legendary Brando was known for his less-than-dignified behavior on movie sets, infamously when it came to dealing with prominent female actresses with whom he'd work. Fellow legend Sophia Loren memorably told the tale of how Brando put his hands on her while they were filming 1967's A Countess from Hong Kong. Calmly, Loren turned around, blew in his face and told him never to do that again. From there, their working relationship was strained.

15. Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte

Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte
Touchstone Pictures

Another incident of dislike that's been well documented. Roberts and Nolte starred in 1994's I Love Trouble, and listening to both stars detail the experience, the title was fitting. During an interview with the New York Times, Roberts called Nolte "disgusting" and didn't appreciate his reportedly crude and unprofessional behavior on set. More recently, Nolte didn't shy away from Roberts' feelings about him and their time spent making the movie, and even admits he was partially to blame for the rift.

14. Tyrese Gibson and James Franco

Tyrese Gibson and James Franco
Touchstone Pictures

The issues between these two stars stem from working together on 2006's Annapolis. Gibson was not a big fan of Franco's knack for method acting, and thought it was a little too much, often bordering on inappropriate when it came to professionalism. Franco, who has reportedly rubbed others in Hollywood the wrong way over the years, has offered to bury the hatchet with Gibson, but that apparently still has not happened.

13. Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer

Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer
Warner Bros. Pictures

The well-documented frigidness between these Magic Mike co-stars stemmed from the upstanding Tatum not being particularly fond of the "bad boy" Pettyfer's casting in the movie. Pettyfer, apparently fine with that distinction, admitted on the Bret Easton Ellis podcast that he purposely didn't talk much when he got on the set. He eventually rented an apartment from an acquaintance of Tatum's while filming, but left prematurely with some outstanding rent due. Needless to say, Pettyfer did not return for the 2015 sequel Magic Mike XXL.

12. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Vin Diesel

Appearing in 2017's The Fate of the Furious apparently brought out the worst in these big-time stars. Diesel reportedly showcased some "tough love" toward The Rock, who in turn questioned his co-star's professionalism. The two have traded barbs via social media over the years, but reportedly have made up. However, when you're dealing with egos this massive, bad blood is likely to ensue.

11. Bill Murray and Lucy Liu

Bill Murray and Lucy Liu
Columbia Pictures

Bill Murray is a legendary funny man, but reportedly, not everyone on the set of Charlie's Angels (2000) had a good time with him. According to an interview with the Los Angeles Times, and most recently with Vanity Fair , Lucy Liu, one of the film's stars, claimed Murray hurled insults about her performance while shooting the movie. Liu, despite not being a household Hollywood name at the time, had no trouble sticking up for herself, claiming she actually threw punches at Murray.

10. Joan Collins and Linda Evans

Joan Collins and Linda Evans
ABC

Can we say that the TV catfight was perfected by Alexis (Collins) and Krystle (Evans) from Dynasty? It seemed only a matter of time before Blake Carrington's current wife (Evans) and former spouse (Collins) would duke it out for the early 1980s prime-time television audience to enjoy. And it was grand, continuing on into a fountain pool. Even more noteworthy was that the two reportedly did not get along in real life, noting personality clashes as the catalyst.

9. Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic
ABC

The on-screen chemistry between Fillion's Richard Castle and Katic's Kate Beckett from eight-season ABC hit Castle was simply stellar. The pair balanced serious and funny quite well and their partnership, which eventually grew into marriage, was wonderful and emotional. However, the relationship between the actors off-screen was the complete opposite. Multiple media reports over the years stated that the tension and general dislike between two grew as the show progressed. So much so, that they had to go to couples counseling in order for their working relationship to keep going.

8. Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano

Shannen Doherty and Alyssa Milano
Spelling Television

Another well-publicized feud from the 1990s and 2000s. The two popular actresses co-starred in the long-running series Charmed, and never seemed to get along, as would seem possible when two strong-willed, attention-seeking women come together on the same project. In fact, Doherty stated it was Milano who played a part in her character being killed off at the end of Season 3. Fortunately, the two eventually made up as the years passed, and Milano tastefully commented on her sadness in the wake of Doherty's 2024 death following a long battle with breast cancer.

7. Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni
Columbia Pictures

This one actually got ugly. The two co-starred as love interests in the 2024 romantic drama It Ends with Us. Baldoni also directed the movie of which Lively claimed he sexually harassed her on the set. It was a claim that led to a lawsuits, including that of a smear campaign on Lively by Baldoni and his team. Baldoni countersued, claiming Lively damaged his reputation through her legal actions.

6. Will Smith and Janet Hubert

Will Smith and Janet Hubert
NBC

One of the more public feuds was that of these co-stars from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The two had problems working together, as Hubert (who played Will's Aunt Viv) left after the first three seasons of the popular show, and claimed to have trouble getting work after Smith called her "difficult" in the media. Years later, Smith claimed his immaturity was to blame for his behavior and remarks toward Hubert. The two reconciled publically during the 2020 filming of the HBO Max special celebrating 30 years of the show.

5. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling
New Line Cinema

To many, 2004's The Notebook is a beloved movie. However, the relationship between on-screen love interests McAdams and Gosling was a bit icy at the beginning of filming, notably because Gosling didn't think he had any chemistry with McAdams, and actually wanted her replaced. However, McAdams stayed put, chemistry was generated, the movie was a hit, and the two even dated in real life for two years.

4. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey

Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey
Vestron Pictures

As is the case often with co-stars, conflicting personalities can be a problem while working together. In the case of Swayze and Grey, the two reportedly didn't exactly hit it off while filming 1984's classic Red Dawn. Then, three years later, the pair truly captivated moviegoers as Johnny and Baby from Dirty Dancing, but it wasn't a smooth dance. The serious Swayze didn't necessarily appreciate when Grey would get a little giggly or even too emotional while filming some of those famous dance scenes. So much so, it caused tensions between the two. However, those memorable rehearsal scenes, which mirrored the real-life experience, made for one iconic movie.

3. Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker

Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker
HBO

The back and forth on the status of the friendship between these Sex and The City co-stars has been exhausting for years. Any suggested feud reportedly stemmed from Cattrall's displeasure with Parker's compensation level in the early years of the show. Cattral has also claimed on social media that Parker is not as nice as she seemed. Cattral told Piers Morgan she was never really friends with her Sex and The City co-stars — including Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon.

2. Bea Arthur and Betty White

Bea Arthur and Betty White
Touchstone Pictures; NBC; ABC

These two television legends were the best of friends on screen — notably through The Golden Girls. However, off-screen, the two were not the best of buddies. Arthur was a stoic personality, serious and at her craft and reportedly all business while on set. White, meanwhile, was upbeat and optimistic, a joker and good spirit for all seasons. Yet, White's disposition apparently did not often mesh with Arthur, thus leaving their relationship chilly.

1. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford

Bette Davis and Joan Crawford
Warner Bros. Pictures

When it comes to Hollywood feuds, it likely doesn't get any more notorious than when two undisputed screen legends are involved. For years, Davis and Crawford were rivals, highly competitive actors who often bashed each other in public and eyed the same men. They also severely clashed when it came to Davis' opinionated, outspoken nature compared to Crawford glamorous, yet reserved, demeanor. The two starred together in the iconic What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), for which Davis was nominated for her 10th and final Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. However, she felt Crawford had something to do with her not winning the category.
