Matt Rhule is trying to rebuild the Nebraska Cornhuskers program. He is having to do it in a new college football landscape. The ease of the transfer portal has led to unprecedented player movement. A big position that often moves? Quarterback. This year is no different. Lots of quarterbacks have announced their intention to enter the portal. What does it take to land one of these quarterbacks? Rhule has the price.

Matt Rhule Reveals The Price For A QB In The Transfer Portal

Rhule told reporters on Wednesday that it is a pretty hefty price to land a top quarterback through the portal. “A good QB in the portal costs $1 million, $1.5, $2 million,” he said speaking about NIL deals. That is a massive number for college football players. A mere ten years ago this would’ve been an unheard of statement but that is how fast college football can change. Players often enter the portal looking for more money so a program has to be able to offer them a robust NIL package.

Good Or Bad For College Football?

It’s a mix of both. The good is that players are getting paid for their services. They generate so much money for these schools and they deserve to have some portion of that pie. The bad comes from how easy it is to switch up teams. It has essentially become an unregulated free agency period in college football. Coaches cannot count on any player being in the program for a significant amount of time. It makes it very hard to connect with fans and build a program like Rhule is trying to do.

Matt Rhule is trying to find gems in the transfer portal. So is every other coach. Like it or not, it is the nature of college football today. For any program, it is adapt or die.
