Arizona State’s running back room just took a major hit: head coach Kenny Dillingham confirmed this week that Kyson Brown will be out for the “foreseeable future.”
Brown, who had handled some important carries in 2025, now won’t practice or play while further imaging and tests are conducted. Dillingham’s phrasing suggested the absence could stretch beyond ASU’s upcoming bye week, meaning Brown is unlikely to return any time soon.
This development leaves Arizona State’s backfield suddenly unsettled just as Big 12 competition heats up. Brown entered the 2025 campaign with high expectations after a strong offseason, and he played in limited fashion before his ankle injury sidelined him.
In 2024, Brown logged 351 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 73 carries, additionally catching 13 passes for 189 yards and a score. At 6‑foot‑1 and 205 pounds, he offers a blend of size and speed that ASU hoped to lean on in a heavier role this season.
The timing of Brown’s absence is especially troublesome given ASU’s upcoming slate of Big 12 contests. Without one of their lead backs, Arizona State’s offense will need to adapt, relying more on the passing game or stretch-run, controlling tempo, or leaning on committee rushing efforts. Keeping balance and consistency in close game settings becomes much harder when your depth chart is forced into emergency mode.
At minimum, the Sun Devils will now manage their season without one of their most promising offensive pieces, and every opponent in the Big 12 will watch closely to see how they adjust in Tempe.
